Ellen Pompeo whipped Grey’s Anatomy fans up into a frenzy as she shared a snap with Patrick Dempsey.
The pair reunited as Patrick briefly returned as Derek Shepherd for the season 17 premiere – leaving viewers speechless.
Taking to Instagram, Ellen – who plays Meredith Grey – blessed us all with a behind the scenes glimpse as she posed with her co-star on the beach.
Alongside two snaps, one of them donning face masks, she penned: ‘Let’s love, let’s heal, let’s wear a mask… #greysanatomy.’
Absolutely no one could cope, rushing to praise the upload in the comments.
‘THIS IS SO ICONIC,’ a follower screamed, while another insisted: ‘This just made my 2020 so much better.
‘I think that I am dreaming,’ one wrote.
‘I will never get over this moment,’ a fan replied.
As an Instagram user agreed: ‘Such a beautiful surprise for all of us!
‘It’s such a pleasure seeing you guys finally reunited after all those years.’
Patrick returned for the very last seconds of the season 17 opener, in a beach sequence with Ellen’s character.
Derek, aka McDreamy, was killed off in 2015 and life has never been the same since for any of the staff at Grey’s.
Lifting the lid on Patrick’s cameo, showrunner Krista Vernoff explained in a statement: ‘We had to come up with creative ways to allow our show to still be fun and romantic and provide some escapism. Enter Patrick Dempsey.
‘The beach motif—which will continue beyond the premiere – provided a way for us to live outside the pandemic even for a little while here and there.
‘And Derek’s return provided pure joy for us, for Meredith, and for the fans. Season 17 has been a Herculean effort by our cast, our crew, our writers, and our partners at Disney and ABC – and we are proud of it.’
‘But our effort is nothing compared to the work of our Frontline healthcare workers to whom this season is dedicated. We hope our show inspires you to wear your masks to protect them and each other.
‘As Derek Shepherd would say, “It’s a beautiful day to save lives.”’
Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays on ABC.
