Great British Bake Off 2020 recap: What happened in the final as Peter Sawkins, Dave Friday and Laura Adlington faced off

So that’s it. Great British Bake off is over for another year as the 2020 series aired a closely fought final.

At a time when we all needed a bit of cosy joy in our lives, Bake Off was there to deliver.

Tuesday night’s final saw Peter Sawkins, Laura Adlington and Dave Friday enter the tent for the final time.

Of course judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were not going to make things easy for them, setting them another temperature sensitive challenge.

Laura, who has struggled throughout the series, found herself in a corner once more as the hot weather worked against her.

Peter and Dave didn’t escape criticism either when it came to their showstoppers, and it looked as though the race for first place was wide open.

There can only be one winner thought and in the end, it was the baker who had been consistently good throughout the day who got the big prize.

So what happened in the final Paul described as the ‘closest ever’?

Signature challenge: Custard slices

The first task was creating identical custard slices, with the heat inside the tent working against all three finalists.

Dave ended up leaving something off the top of his as he could get it to stay put.

Laura meanwhile had an even worse time when hers refused to set and she was forced to present them to the judges with custard oozing out of the middle.

It all became too much for and she had to take a moment to herself inside the fridge, with Dave trying to comfort her.

As usual though they tasted better than they looked, with Prue said: ‘There’s nothing wrong with your baking’.

Technical challenge: Walnut whirls

Not whips, whirls. The heat caused problems yet again as Peter’s marshmallow began to sag instead of sitting up straight in a stiff peak.

Their skills were really tested as they had to temper the chocolate so it coated the gooey centre and had a proper crisp finish.

Laura’s efforts in the technical, while better than her custard slices, firmly ruled her out of the race for the trophy.

She said of her finished whirls: ‘I think I was the worst of a good bunch this time. I’m not going to cry over it.’

In the last ever technical it was Dave who came who first, and he was on a high going into the showstopper.

Showstopper challenge: Dessert tower

In a nice finish to the series, the bakers had to create a dessert tower summing up their experience on Bake Off this year.

Laura created a rather higgledy-piggledy creation Rainbow Dessert Tower. It had a lovely message about staying positive, but by that point the final was between Peter and Dave.

Peter was next with his impressive Bonkers Bake Off Bubble Cake, adorned with choux buns which Paul found to be a bit ‘stodgy’.

Dave took a huge risk by recreating bakes that hadn’t gone well for him in the past, and props to him for pushing himself.

He impressed with his ‘original, enticing and well designed’ creation that was ‘as tender as anything’. However his choux buns were ‘too flat’.

And the Great British Bake Off 2020 winner is…

Gathered outside with the judges, hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas, the production team and the staff at the hotel that had kept them all in a bubble for six weeks, it was time for the big moment.

After Matt thanked the medic team who had been on hand to keep everyone safe during the pandemic, Noel announced that Peter was the winner.

Feeling elated after his win, Peter – the youngest ever winner and the first Scottish person to win – said: ‘I can’t quite believe that I’m here. ‘This is gonna be a really huge chapter in my life, and what a way for it to end.’

Describing himself as a ‘Bake Off nerd’ he said he was feeling like ‘an excited, giddy kid’.

Paul described it as the ‘closest final ever’ between Peter and Dave, saying at some points it came down to ‘a single flake’.

What happened next?

A wonderfully uplifting montage showed what the bakers had been up to since the series finished, including Dave welcoming his new baby son Ronnie, Mak’s son getting married, Peter going back to university and Lottie and Mark meeting up.

A beautiful tribute

In the episode’s last moments, a message was shown dedicating the series to 2014 Great British Bake Off star Luis Troyano, who died of cancer earlier this month.
