Spice Girls fans have a horse to thank for the band’s long-anticipated reunion last year.
Geri Halliwell, who bolted from the Spices in 1998, has been telling how she was inspired to climb back into the showbiz saddle by her noble steed Beauty.
The 38-year-old, who has admitted she felt ‘lonely’ after her dramatic departure, credits having a mare — in a good way — for her return to the group. ‘I gave my life 100 per cent to music,’ she said. ‘Then when I got to my 30s, I found it so difficult because the teenage bravado had run out and I wasn’t sure where I belong.’
Finding solace in horse-riding, Geri explained: ‘When I found Beauty, I got my courage back. When I’m out there I’m no other identity other than just a woman on a horse feeling brave — that’s it. And sometimes it just feels amazing to feel that.
‘Stepping out on stage with the Spice Girls again, I felt, “You know what? It’s all right”. The feeling of wanting to connect, the feeling of freedom and joy was greater than the fear. Beauty taught me that.’
Her comments come after reports recently claimed bandmate Baby Spice Emma Bunton earned £6million from the reunion concerts.
Geri’s emotional delve into her past was part of her online show Rainbow Woman, for which she has scaled Mount Snowdon and dressed up as Elizabeth I.
The star, who notched up four consecutive No.1s after she first went solo, has also found the confidence to drop her own tunes again.
Debuting Travelling Light on her show, she said the song was inspired by her being a working mum to Bluebell, 14, and Monty, three.
‘It’s about changing, pushing through the darkness into the light,’ said Geri.
‘Ironically, I wasn’t travelling light when I wrote it. I was seven months pregnant, walking up four flights of stairs to get to the studio!’

Dauber Lipa has got something to spray…
Dua Lipa is no wallflower… especially when it comes to hanging out with Miley Cyrus.
The British pop siren gave fans a sexy little outtake of the pair’s new video, Prisoner, by purring against a wall of graffiti in a bra top and knickers.
Dua and Miley unleashed the clip on the world at the weekend. It shows the duo humping against each other, spewing red liquid and cruising around town like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé in Telephone.
Miley, 27, praised her 25-year-old singing partner for not being the desperate type, saying: ‘When Dua’s around, her charisma… there’s no sense of desperation to it, like, “I’ve got to be the best because if I’m not, what if”.
‘There’s a calmness to her success, which I really like. Because I feel like you can tell someone is too much of a… or a survivalist. That I don’t like.’
She also revealed the pair have more tracks up their sleeves and assured fans: ‘We’re not competing.’
Grandad? It’s Ramsay’s kid-chen nightmare
After becoming a father for the fifth time, Gordon Ramsay has another reason to spout the F-word — people keep mistaking him for a grandad.
It’s particularly hurtful because the firebrand chef, whose wife Tana gave birth to son Oscar last year, has been battling to stay young and healthy.
He fumed: ‘The worst thing is when I’m walking with Tana and Jack [his 20-year-old eldest], and everyone is looking at Jack as if Oscar is his son. “You must be so proud to be a grandad”.
‘F**k off, he’s ours. If I get called grandad one more f**king time, I’m going to hit the roof.’ And Gordon, 54, certainly feels the burn as he attempts to keep fit by riding a bike.
He told Men’s Health UK that he once said to cycling champ Mark Cavendish: ‘F**k me, that piece between my ball bag and my arsehole! I’ve never got over how painful it is on the saddle.’
Mark told him to ‘get rhinoceros skin’.
Gordon admitted: ‘So, there’s me thinking there’s a gel out there called Rhinoceros Skin.’
See Men’s Health UK, out tomorrow.
Ex-scaffolder Cal’s going up in the world
Being an influencer on Instagram is just as viable a career as any a university might throw up, says former scaffolder Callum Jones.
Thanks to his fame and riches from appearing on Love Island, the model and influencer now has his former scaffolding workmates working on his smart new pad.
These days the ITV2 show is attracting more applications than Oxbridge, and Callum says his life has certainly ‘changed for the better’ following his stint.
The 23-year-old, from Manchester, explained: ‘I don’t have to get up at half four in the morning and go into work.’
Callum said it was ‘so mad’ that some of the lads at his former company are working on the house he recently moved into, adding: ‘I never went to uni. Some people are meant for it, some people aren’t. Each to their own.
‘The way the world is going, everything is going online and people can make a living on there. There’s going to be more opportunities for more people than a few years ago.
‘You get to meet a lot of people you wouldn’t get to meet in the outside world. It’s definitely got its positives.’
You’ve got sole! Sam unveils singing secret
Sam Sam Smith has revealed a ‘mad’ trick to hitting the high notes.
Sharing the warbling secret, the 28-year-old Diamonds singer explained: ‘Even when I’m going to hit a massive note sometimes, I’ve been taught this little trick now of pressing your feet into the ground as you go through it and it completely changes the sound. It’s mad.
‘Your whole body supports the sound of your voice.’
Have we seen the last post from Lorde?
Lorde has signalled why her Instagram posts languish at a grand total of two.
The Green Light singer says despite amassing 6.6million followers, she can’t handle the grim state of the world.
Lorde, 24, said: ‘Part of what made me peace out on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality…’
The Kiwi was last spotted in Auckland with her boyfriend, music boss Justin Warren, 41.
Black Panther 2 to start filming in US next year
Movie bosses are forging ahead with filming the sequel to Black Panther, despite the death of star Chadwick Boseman during the summer. The much-anticipated Marvel blockbuster is poised to start shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, in July next year.
It was delayed following the death in August of 43-year-old Boseman, who had colon cancer.
Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are expected to return for the sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which claimed Wright’s character would assume a more prominent role.
Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, who starred in Narcos: Mexico, will join the cast as one of the antagonists.
Marvel hasn’t yet explained how it will continue without Boseman, who played T’Challa, but it is not expected to resort to CGI to include him in the film.
Watch out Johnny… here comes Maargh-ot Robbie
Margot Robbie promises to bring ‘girl power’ to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise as Johnny Depp’s career lies in tatters.
The Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood star has been drafted in to carry a Pirates spin-off. The script is being put together by British screenwriter Christina Hodson — separately from a sixth Pirates flick also in the works.
Promising ‘lots of girl power’, Margot, 30, said she loved Hodson’s writing but it was too early to go into details.
She added: ‘I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process. We’re really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.’
The franchise bosses have said they are ‘unsure’ whether Depp, 57, will return as Captain Jack Sparrow.
He recently quit Fantastic Beasts after losing his ‘wife-beater’ defamation case at London’s High Court.
Tovey: I’m back with lord of the whinge
Russell Tovey has explained why he took back fiancé Steve Brockman following their break-up — even though he thinks he still ‘whinges’.
The Sister actor and rugby player Brockman got back together last year after giving their relationship a 12-month breather.
They had rushed into wedding plans after falling for each other but Tovey, 39, has told The Observer magazine: ‘Breaking up with my boyfriend made us stronger when we got back together.
‘In the whirlwind honeymoon phase you can forget to work out who the other person is. Now we have more confidence. We both want this.
‘It has all been worth it — even if he still whinges a lot.’
