It all worked out
So my PlayStation 5 turned up on Thursday after all and… it’s great! I don’t like the design, it’s too big and the way it wobbles on the stand even when horizontal is just a weird design decision. I’m glad I haven’t got a cat or something that would be climbing all over it.
Other than that though it seems great. The DualSense really does seem to live up to the hype. When you first boot up Astro’s Playroom it does a little demo of all the features and the adaptive triggers are really impressive. Really looking forward to seeing how this works in other games and I love how new and next gen it feels.
Haven’t had a chance to play Demon’s Souls yet but Spider-Man: Miles Morales on briefly and you can definitely see the difference even if it is basically the same city. The reflections from all the skyscrapers around you is really impressive. To be honest it seems a bigger next gen leap than many I’ve seen already and it’s only partially a new game.
Very happy that everything turned out all right and I got things in time. Role on the next, now current, generation!

A successful day
I know a lot of people were having trouble but my PlayStation 5 turned up fine today, pretty much exactly when it was supposed to. Very happy that I ordered from John Lewis and not GAME or Amazon, given the problems they seem to be having.
Everything seems great too. I only got Demon’s Souls because of the prices of everything but the graphics really are amazing. I’m also kind of surprised I did okay until I got to the Vanguard Demon. I did then, pretty much straight away, but I’d lasted a good half an hour getting there and that gave me quite a bit of confidence that I can do this thing.
The DualSense is really good too, very subtle range of vibrations and the amount of pressure the triggers need. I’m impressed so far and no buyer’s regret, so that’s a good days gaming in my book. Glad I took the day off work!

GC: Everyone dies at the Vanguard Demon, at least the first time round.
Endless queuing
Well, it looks like I’m not getting a PlayStation 5, at least not this week. Did everything I could, following all the online advice and tips but either the websites didn’t work, they crashed halfway through, or I was left in an endless queue that led nowhere.
I don’t know who to really blame here. At least the sites didn’t start selling it till 9am, so that was at least fair, but the whole thing is just so frustrating. Makes me wish we could just go into a shop and buy one. Queuing round the block for a couple of hours is fine by me if it guarantees me one at the end but all this endless waiting and crashing, going from website to website, is just rage inducing.
I’ll still try and get one when I can but I don’t think I’m going to spend the better part of a day trying ever again. And when I see all the people that did get one selling them on eBay I am going to get be livid. Scalpers can… well, I’m sure we’re all thinking the same thing about what should happen to them.

Upgrade paths
Having secured an Xbox Series X last week from GAME and a PlayStation 5 last night from Currys. I need some advice on upgrade paths, like Spider-Man Remastered – do I need to buy the Ultimate Edition for Miles Morales to play or will the PlayStation 4 Spider-Man work with an in-game fee, same as Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Also, did anyone notice on Cyberpunk 2077 Xbox One X gameplay struggled and jumped in places, I think they should have delayed till next year, but we’ll see if there are any mega patches coming.

PS: Looking forward to the Serious Sam Collection, does GC know its release date?
GC: The PlayStation 4 version of Spider-Man will work via backwards compatibility but to get the remaster you have to buy the Ultimate Edition or pay for it via the in-game menu of Miles Morales. The Serious Sam Collection came out on Tuesday.
Hardware error
I got my PlayStation 5 delivered on launch day no bother. Great I think, until I open the box and no AC cable. Luckily the PlayStation 4 power cable works just fine.
This isn’t so bad for me but just imagine if this happens on Christmas for someone who doesn’t happen to have a spare AC sitting around.
Keep up all the good work guys.

Compulsory purchase
That the PlayStation 5 will be a huge seller seems beyond doubt, but will ‘sales’ of Astro’s Playroom be counted as it’s a pack-in title? Or does the fact that it’s not on a disc, like Wii Sports, mean it’s likely to be seen as part of the operating system infrastructure?
Classing Wii Sports as one of the best-selling games of all-time has always seemed a bit bizarre to me. But the only difference here (besides the nature of the tech that Astro’s Playroom is showcasing) seems to be the format the game comes on…?

GC: Ignoring the fact that Wii Sports was sold separately in Japan, many people bought a Wii specifically to play it – fun as it is, we doubt that’s the case for Astro’s Playroom. But yes, we suppose Astro’s Playroom will sell exactly as many copies as there are PlayStation 5s.
Seven year stretch
I know you’ll be inundated next gen talk, so I’ll keep my thoughts short and sweet: just a couple of hours with the PlayStation 5 so far, and I’m already in love.
Just the snappiness of everything confirms and validates that we’ve truly arrived in the next gen, and Astro’s Playroom really is the perfect intro to it. Roll on the next seven years of gaming goodness!

GC: Actually, we had less letters yesterday than at any other time in months. We guess everyone was too busy either playing with their PlayStation 5 or refreshing Amazon.

Hope for the generation
Excellent piece by GC on PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series X/S. Well thought out and a fair summary on the current state of next gen.
I must add that the reason Xbox Series X/S is lagging behind PlayStation 5 in development terms is because Microsoft opted to wait for the full RDNA 2 feature set from AMD. So their development tools are way behind Sony. That’s why earlier rumours circulated that it was Sony who had the more powerful console. So what we have at launch are essentially PlayStation 5 ports onto Xbox, with none of the features like variable rate shading, mesh shaders, etc. being implemented.
But GC are right, I think, I wouldn’t expect huge differences with third party titles anyway, it may just come down to first party showing what these consoles are capable of. Sony are masters at getting the best from their studios – even though PlayStation 5 is unarguably inferior to Xbox Series X on paper.
I’ve got high hopes for this generation, it’s the first time I consider the hardware to be at the cutting edge with no obvious limitations. I hope developers focus upon game design over prettier visuals, and make some strides in artificial intelligence. The machine learning capabilities are especially intriguing.
It’s a good time for all gamers: PC players stand to benefit from consoles pushing the envelope and you can bet Nintendo won’t be resting on their laurels with a successor to Switch. Gaming has delivered some much needed excitement and respite from the dumpster fire that is 2020. So put those console wars on hold and enjoy your games!

Waited all morning to get a PlayStation 5, got it in the basket at John Lewis but it crashed so many times.

Did not expect IO Interactive’s announcement to be a James Bond game, wow! Really looking forward to it, they seem like a great mix and… yes, I want a GoldenEye 007 remake now!

This week’s Hot Topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader CarrotCakeIsYum (PSN ID), who asks what are your unpopular gaming opinions?
What things in gaming do you disagree with the majority opinion on, in terms of the quality of games, developers, consoles, or anything else?
Do you tend to disagree with a lot of accepted wisdom or are these examples exceptions to the rule? What’s the most surprised or disappointed you’ve been by something you expected to be either very good or very bad?
