The happiest day
Just wanted to start by wishing everyone getting a PlayStation 5 luck with their delivery, or luck with attempting to get one as stock becomes available.
I’ll spend the whole day somewhere between curtain twitching and panicking that something will go wrong with my delivery, but it is hopefully going to be a fantastic and memorable day.
New console launches are just so full of wonder and excitement. I can remember where I was, and what I was doing in life for every console I’ve been lucky enough to own. It has reminded me of Nick Hornby’s brilliant book, Fever Pitch; where all the important moments in his life and punctuated by his beloved Arsenal playing. Perhaps that is the other way around – all the important football matches in his life are punctuated by life events he remembers alongside? Anyway, I digress.
My point is I hope anyone getting a PlayStation 5 really tries to savour the moment. it is a rare event, coming every six-ish years, and I treasure these moments. Gaming has, and my wife would roll her eyes at this, given me some of my happiest moments (remember I said some), it is absolutely my happy place, and getting a console is the happiest gaming day of all.
And even if the console is a let-down, at least I finally get to meet Ray Tracing, as my understanding is he’s a really great guy.
Best regards to you and thank you for your informative and fun coverage so far.

Time for the next gen
I’m very impressed by what I’ve seen of Demon’s Souls performance mode. The 60fps seems to be rock solid and the load times between areas is so fast. All at the same time providing a clear jump in graphics over the last gen. PlayStation 4/Xbox One is officially last gen now, right?
I’m well impressed with a crispy native 4K image and ray-tracing too but I’ll binning them off for a silky smooth 60fps. Maybe mid-gen upgrades will be powerful enough to do 4K and ray-tracing at 60fps.
But for now I’m very impressed at the current gen consoles’ ability to deliver 60fps on both current games and backwards compatible games. It’s about time to be honest.

GC: Demon’s Souls doesn’t have ray-tracing. This surprised us too, as there’s some very impressive reflections and use of shadows. And yes, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are now officially current gen.
Early riser
I hope everybody who wants to get a new console gets them, I will be keeping my computer on near where I sleep with the in-stock alarm set to on for PlayStation 5 tonight. I have bought Sackboy and Spider-Man from 365games.co.uk, which were a few pounds cheaper at the time – they have gone up in price now.
I thought the games would be delivered by Royal Mail but Amazon are delivering them, which surprised me, they will own everything eventually!

PS: Elite Dangerous and The World Next Door is free on PC on Epic Games Store today at 4pm.

The PS5 song
‘Twas the night before PlayStation and all through my house, I hoovered and polished and… umm… drank… Famous Grouse? (actually, more of a rum guy if I’m honest).
With my pre-order sorted and delivery due, I looked at my PS3 and Wii U.
‘One of you needs to go’ I declared.
Neither replied and instead they just stared.
‘Of course they can’t speak they are consoles, you fool!’
Said my (quite rude in hindsight) children on their way out to school (night school, obvs.).
With shelving space clear for the PlayStation 5 (and planning consent, ‘cos, you know, it’s big innit).
I decided to send in this terrible rhyme.
To all fellow gamers: be ye merry, and lubed,
Whether Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or GameCube.
Ummmm something, something, video games are rad,
Super excited, I know my poem’s bad.
Oh yeah, don’t put lube on your consoles! I mean I don’t know how the young’ns play games these days for so long without getting RSI, but it probably isn’t lube.

The Christmas rush
Whilst aware of the challenges developers have faced, I really wish Cyberpunk, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Trails Of Cold Steel 4, Yakuza: Like A Dragon and other possible role-playing games I’ve missed could have been spaced out better this year.
Gone from under load over the last few months to overload, especially at Christmas when lockdown will hopefully be lifted and I won’t have the excuse of having to stay in and play video games all day,
Just a bit of a pointless whinge but I guess it’s better to have too much choice than too little.

Trust and hope
Nice to see some console footage of Cyberpunk 2077, even if it was just the more powerful Xboxes. Has a game ever been so anticipated with so little gameplay footage?
I can’t deny that I’ve not been looking forward to it myself, especially as The Witcher was so good, but I will have to wait for reviews, as I can’t abide the thought of going in completely blind and being disappointed. CD Projekt have set themselves lofty ambitions and a high bar, and I hope for their sakes it turns out well. Not because of the inane death threats from the idiot brigade, but simply to secure their future in a marketplace that is normally dominated by a few publishers now.
It’s also worrying that people may buy it for the original Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and they just won’t have the power to make a reasonable stab at a good frame rate, or the resolution will be crushed down to something silly like 720p. We just don’t know enough.
So, when the reviews do come, I would like to see Cyberpunk 2077 put through its paces on various machines, just so we know what to expect.

Strange drift
I hope everyone is keeping well.
I just wanted to ask for some opinions on the Joy-Con drift I am experiencing. Both of my left controllers only came back from Nintendo in June, after being repaired for the drift problem, and now I am experiencing it with both again. The only thing is it seems to be only taking effect in menus where the selection will constantly scroll down.
My movement in Pokémon is unaffected until I go into a battle or the menu. When I go out into the Home screen it’s stuck moving down as well. I’ve updated/calibrated, etc. but nothing stops the issue. The odd thing is when I use my partner’s left Joy-Con the same thing happens – but only on my console. I’m starting to think it’s a software issue or connection problem on the console side. I can’t find anyone else online who has experienced something similar. Anyone else experience or hear of this?

GC: That is an odd one, we can’t say we’ve heard of those symptoms before.
Award for awesomeness
I’ve just been rediscovering how great a game Rayman Legends is on the Switch.
I played it originally when it was first released for the PlayStation 3 and really enjoyed it.
Last week my eight-year-old son had some pocket money to spend so I had a look though the Nintendo eShop and saw Legends on offer for £7.49 with a free demo.
After loving the demo he asked for the full game so a quick download later we were off.
If anyone hasn’t tried it yet I thoroughly recommend everyone try it, immediately if possible.
There is mountains of content, the actual game, a previous Rayman game called Origins which you unlock by playing, challenge levels, Kung Foot mini-game – which he was in stitches playing with me.
His mum was also able to play with us, as up to four players can play, something which creates some funny moments trying to balance on each others’ heads and just mindlessly slapping each other.
The level design is genius, so many new ideas being introduced over the various levels.
However, the single best thing about the game is the sound, the music is superb and it has possibly the best sound effects in all gaming.
‘Help meee!’ ‘Lucky!’ and my absolute favourite when you discover a secret area… ‘Oooooo’.
And I haven’t even mentioned the music levels yet, the one based on Ram Jam’s Black Betty deserves an award for awesomeness.

A console you can rely on
Console launches that are plagued by stock shortages and technical issues, games that require months of patching after release, along with developers who don’t respond to their player base. Which begs the question – what are gamers really getting for their money?
You fancy a shiny new games console and wait eagerly for its release only to find its sold out everywhere and players are reporting technical issues. But that’s OK, as you just need to wait for updates, they had your money though. Shareholders are happy, the players not so much.
As for new games, well, the game you just paid £60 for is full of bugs and other issues, you let the developers know but they don’t respond, they had your money though. They are happy, the players not so much.
And you’re not getting the full game anyway, the rest is behind season passes that cost half the game price on top and includes content you have to wait months for. In total it seems like a bad deal yet players are hungry for games, so they put up with it. It’s wrong but what can you do?
It would be like buying a loaf of bread and noticing that there are slices missing which you need to pay extra for. No one would buy it.
As for the next gen consoles, should we buy one yet? No I don’t think so, at least until after a few updates. PlayStation 4 is still being updated years after its release. If you buy a next gen now you would just have the stress of technical issues to deal with, but that’s OK for them as they would have had your money and you would be requested to be patient.
I miss the days of the Sega Mega Drive, a console you could rely on, games that were complete, fun games as well; not today’s repetitive time sinks, 40 hour games bloated to 100 hours by repetitive stuff. Looking at you Ubisoft.
I have been a gamer for 25 years myself but often find myself asking what players are really getting? And the answer, as far as I’m concerned, is a bad deal.

Inbox also-rans
I downloaded Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on the 13th and have only been able to play it twice since the error message says error in lobby or something similar. The only option it gives me then is press X to dismiss. I have noticed that if I go on the game early in the day I can get on the game. Have you any suggestions on how I rectify this?
Martin
GC: None, we’re afraid. It has been a particularly poor launch, so the only thing to do is wait for an update. Although you do seem to be being more unlucky than most.
Why are you allowing Demon’s Souls to be in your game of the year list, but you didn’t allow Shadow Of The Colossus remake to be included?
Pete
GC: We’re not? Although we are making an exception for Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Maybe I am cynical, but it seems to me the British Army starting an esports team is not a sign that gaming is now seen as an adult pastime at all. I think it is directly aimed at marketing a future career in the army to kids who are deciding what to do when they leave school.
Chris Hard
GC: We think you’re right.
This week’s Hot Topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader CarrotCakeIsYum (PSN ID), who asks what are your unpopular gaming opinions?
What things in gaming do you disagree with the majority opinion on, in terms of the quality of games, developers, consoles, or anything else?
Do you tend to disagree with a lot of accepted wisdom or are these examples exceptions to the rule? What’s the most surprised or disappointed you’ve been by something you expected to be either very good or very bad?
