The first episode of new gameshow Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel saw a contestant walk away with an incredible £76,000 after taking a huge gamble in the final round.
The BBC programme, which began on Saturday November 28, involves three contestants teaming up in a bid to win a huge sum of money, with the assistance of celebrity ‘experts’ who sit around a huge wheel.
One of those taking part in the first episode was Leome, who told host Michael McIntyre that if he won any prize money, he would take his family to Jamaica, donate a portion of his winnings to charity and ‘party’ in celebration.
By the end of the show, there was £38,000 in the prize pot.
At this point, the celebrities taking part were ranked in order of who was the strongest ‘expert’ throughout the episode.
X-Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary was placed at the top of the ranking, with television presenter Richard Arnold ranked in the middle and reality star Joey Essex at the bottom.
For the final question on the show, Michael explained to Leome that if he turned to Dermot for help – the strongest expert on the night – and delivered the right answer, he would receive half the total prize money, walking away with £19,000.
If he chose to go with Richard, he would leave with the total £38,000, and if he decided to go with Joey – the weakest celebrity expert – he would win an extraordinary £76,000 with the right answer, doubling the money in the prize pot.
In a risky move, Leome chose to take his chances with Joey. But, it was a risk that paid off monumentally.
The final question Leome received went as follows: ‘Niagara Falls is located on the border between Ontario, Canada and which US state?’, the options being Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York and Ohio.
As Joey contemplated the question with 30 seconds on the clock, Leome calmly said: ‘Joey, don’t worry, I know the answer.’
As an incredulous Michael asked Leome how confident he felt with 20 seconds left on the clock, the contestant responded: ‘I’m feeling very, very confident. Cancel the 20 seconds, I’m good.’
He then told the host that he believed the correct answer was New York, with the comedian joking that he was going to have the phrase ‘cancel the 20 seconds’ printed on a clothing range if the answer was right.
It looks like Michael is going to have to invest in a new retail venture, as it turned out Leome was absolutely right on the money.
As it was announced Leome had won £76,000, he stated: ‘I feel… words cannot explain. I feel amazing.’
Several of the gameshow’s viewers shared their astonishment over Leome’s win on Twitter.
‘Just watched The Wheel and my god, Leome, what a contestant! ‘Cancel the twenty seconds.’ Not enjoyed a game show like that in ages,’ one person said.
‘Omg did anyone watch The Wheel. Leome I love you enjoy your holiday king,’ another wrote.
Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel returns next Saturday night at 8.30pm on BBC One.
