Ellen DeGeneres dedicated her E! People’s Choice Award win to her fans for ‘sticking by [her]’ during the recent allegations of a ‘toxic workplace environment’.
The comedian’s Ellen Show won the best daytime talk show award on Sunday despite multiple allegations of bullying towards staff behind the scenes plaguing the long-running series this summer.
Accepting her award in person, Ellen gave credit to both her employees and fans during her speech.
She said: ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you, from deep, deep down in my heart. I thank you.
‘I am not only accepting this award for myself but on behalf of my amazing crew and staff who make the show possible. They show up every single day, give 100% of themselves, 100% of the time.’
The 62-year-old continued: ‘That’s 250 people, times 170 shows a year, times 18 years, if you carry the 2 and divide it by 11— my point is, I love them all. And I thank them all.
‘I know [where] this award comes from — thank you to the people. Thank you to all of my fans for supporting me, for sticking by me. I cannot tell you how grateful I am. This means more than I can say.’
Before leaving the stage, she then joked: ‘I’m gonna wipe it down with Lysol and put it on my shelf.’
The Ellen Show came faced immense scrutiny in July after several former employees came forward to make allegations of working in an environment of racism, fear and intimidation. Some accused executive producers of rampant sexual assault and harassment.
Ellen broke her silence in September with the return of the talk show and addressed the allegations of misconduct.
She said: ‘As you may have heard, this summer there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show and then there was an investigation.
‘I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.
‘I know that I’m in a position of privilege and power and I realised that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.’
Ellen added: ‘We have had a lot of conversations over the last few weeks about the show, our workplace, and what we want for the future. We have made the necessary changes and today we are starting a new chapter.’
