Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) and Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) say goodbye to beloved son Oliver in Coronation Street, as the young boy dies in emotional scenes.
With Steve having decided against appealing the court’s decision, Leanne informs Imran Habeeb (Charlie de Melo) that she wants to sue the hospital for negligence.
However, Imran reveals that he and co-worker Elliot are no longer prepared to represent her — something which leaves her fuming.
Leanne promises to find another lawyer to take over her case, but her efforts prove fruitless, as every solicitor she calls refuses to help.
Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) informs her sister that Imran didn’t make this decision lightly, but Leanne accuses her of stabbing her in the back.
Meanwhile, Dr Howarth (Caroline Harding) is concerned about Oliver’s liver function and therefore decides to run some blood tests.
Leanne pays Imran another visit and asks him to advise her on the case simply as a friend, but when he refuses to do so, she barricades the door and knocks over a filing cabinet to prevent him from leaving.
She then orders Imran to call Elliot, but Nick (Ben Price) and Toyah — having been informed of Leanne’s actions by Imran — arrive at the door.
At the hospital, Oliver suddenly arrests.
Steve pleads with Leanne to put an end to Oliver’s suffering and let him die with dignity. Therefore, Leanne announces that she’s dropping her appeal.
Later in the week, Leanne is incredibly emotional, as Oliver’s last day arrives, and Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) and Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell) show up at the hospital to say goodbyes.
Meanwhile, Leanne insists that she must go home and get Oliver’s favourite pyjamas, and — while there — Nick informs her that now is the time to say goodbye.
What is mitochondrial disease?
Mitochondrial diseases result from failures of the mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body (except red blood cells).
Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support organ function. When they fail, less and less energy is generated within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death follow. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole organ systems begin to fail.
The parts of the body, such as the heart, brain, muscles and lungs, requiring the greatest amounts of energy are the most affected.
Symptoms vary depending on the organ(s) affected but may include seizures, atypical cerebral palsy, autistic features, developmental problems, fainting and temperature instability.
According to The Lily Foundation, the prognosis depends upon the severity of the disease and other criteria. As more research funds are raised to find more effective treatments and ultimately a cure, some of the affected children and adults are living fairly normal lives with mitochondrial disease.
In other cases, children may not be able to see, hear, talk or walk. Affected children may not survive beyond their teenage years. Adult onset can result in drastic changes from an active lifestyle to a debilitating ilness is a short amount of time.
Treatment plans vary from patient to patient but involve therapies, diet changes and other means to try and slow the progress of the disease.
Leanne admits she can’t do it, but she later musters up the strength to return to the hospital.
Steve and Leanne sit with Oliver, and serenade him once more with a rendition of You are my Sunshine.
Nick and Tracy (Kate Ford) are heartbroken, as they listen from the hospital corridor.
The singing stops and thus they know that Oliver has died.
