Former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas believes the no.10 shirt should be retired across the globe in honour of Diego Maradona.
The Argentine, widely considered the greatest footballer of all-time, passed away on Wednesday afternoon at the age of 60.
Maradona’s health has been in decline in the last months and he died at his Buenos Aires home after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The Argentine transformed the sport and his performances at the 1986 World Cup are the stuff of legend, with the forward almost single-handedly dragging his country to glory in Mexico.
Former club Napoli have already confirmed plans to rename their stadium in honour of the Argentine but Marseille boss Villas-Boas wants the sport to come together to go one step further by retiring the no.10 shirt from the game.
‘Maradona? Yes it is tough news,’ said Villas-Boas.
‘I would like FIFA to retire the number 10 shirt in all competitions, for all teams.
‘It would be the best homage we could do for him. He is an incredible loss for the world of football.’
Tributes for Maradona have poured in from the football world, from his former clubs to the likes of Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho and Cristiano Ronaldo.
As well as a World Cup in 1986, Maradona guided Napoli to two Serie A titles during his time in Naples.
The lights in Napoli’s San Paolo Stadium were left on on Wednesday night in recognition of Maradona’s passing.
