Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update mercilessly mocks Donald Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis

Saturday Night Live had little sympathy for President Donald Trump over his coronavirus diagnosis – comparing the news to ‘a man who hated belts having his trousers fall down’.

The political sketch show returned this weekend, with plenty to play with thanks to recent events – starting with a widely panned debate between Trump and Biden on Tuesday, and ending with the President being transported to hospital following a Covid diagnosis on Friday.

‘This news was a lot for us to process a day before we came back on the air after four months off,’ Colin Jost said during the Weekend Update news segment. ‘And it all happened so fast!

‘I woke up yesterday and heard the President had mild symptoms, and then four hours later he was getting med-evaced to a hospital in what looked like the last chopper out of Vietnam.’

‘It’s a bad sign for America that when Trump said he tested positive for a virus, 60% of people were like, “prove it” – and it’s very weird to see all these people, who clearly hate Trump come out and say, “we wish him well”.

‘I think a lot of them are just guilty that their first wish came true.’

Colin was joined by co-host Michael Che, who said: ‘A lot of people on both sides are saying there’s nothing funny about Trump being hospitalized with coronavirus – even though he mocked the safety precautions for coronavirus – and those people are obviously wrong.

‘There’s a lot funny about this. Maybe not from a moral standpoint, but mathematically, if you were constructing a joke… The problem is it’s almost too funny. It’s so on the nose!

‘It’d be like if I were making fun of people who wear belts and then my pants just immediately fell down.’

The comedy pair continued to make jokes out of both Trump and Biden, and called out those who thought the mocking of the sick President was unfair – reminding them Trump has a history of doing the same.

‘Just hours ago Trump released a video from the hospital saying he’s in better health, which is great news,’ Colin nodded.

‘So I will point out that if the situation were reversed, and it was Biden who got sick, Trump would 100% be at a maskless rally, and getting huge laughs doing an impression of Biden on a ventilator. Just sayin.’

While Trump has become a typical target for the satirical show’s jokes, this season he wasn’t alone – with Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris also being mocked

Jim Carrey joined the cast to play the 77-year-old Democratic Presidential candidate, and Maya Rudolph returned to reprise her beloved take on Kamala.

Saturday Night Live airs on Saturdays on NBC in the US.
