Piers Morgan scolds ‘utterly ridiculous’ Donald Trump for ‘reality show’ drive-by while battling coronavirus

Piers Morgan has branded President Donald Trump ‘utterly ridiculous’ for leaving hospital to greet fans in a drive-by while still receiving treatment for coronavirus.

On Sunday, Trump briefly left the Walter Reed Medical Center in a motorcade of black 4x4s driving very slowly past crowds of cheering supporters while they waved their flags.

Trump, who tested positive for Covid-19 last week, was seen wearing a mask and sitting in the back of the car waving.

The US president had earlier teased his supporters with a ‘surprise’ in a video message, in which he explained that he understood Covid-19 better now that he has it himself.

Reacting to the drive-by, Piers said on Monday’s Good Morning Britain: ‘What’s he doing? The whole thing is utterly ridiculous.

‘The penny may have dropped, the severity of coronavirus, considering he’s now got it. From that ridiculous Rose Garden party, and inside, in fact.’

Piers continued: ‘I tell you who I’m worried for, Governor Chris Christie who I’ve known a very long time. He’s a very big man, morbidly obese and he was seen greeting people. He’s also asthmatic and he’s now in hospital too. I don’t know what they’re thinking.

‘This is from a president who’s in charge of a pandemic who was in hospital himself.’

Governor Christie has also been diagnosed with coronavirus and checked into a hospital like Trump.

‘Vice President Pence is wanting to do his debate on Thursday even after he was around all these people. No, that’s not how this works,’ Piers added.

Referring to one of Trump’s comments in the video he shared on Sunday, Susanna Reid weighed in: ‘How can he love what’s happening?’

Piers continued: ‘You have access to the most incredible people in the world and you’ve only just discovered coronavirus school.

‘What’s your reaction because you’ve had this masterclass? You go out with the secret service and put lives at risk, who put their lives at risk for you everyday.’

Susanna added: ‘That’s because it’s all about him,’ to which Piers said: ‘He thinks it’s a reality show. What does this tell the people of America? If you’ve got coronavirus, go out there and do a drive-by.

‘It’s utterly ridiculous.’

Kate Garraway shared her thoughts and said that Trump was ‘lucky’ that he’s been able to ‘build on the learnings of people like Derek’, referring to her husband Derek Draper who reportedly has the longest case of coronavirus in the UK.

‘It’s just bewildering,’ Kate added.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
