Megan Thee Stallion made a powerful call to ‘protect our black women’ during her performance on Saturday Night Live.
The WAP rapper used her performance of Savage, featuring Beyonce, to deliver a statement about Black Lives Matter and the tragic death of Breonna Taylor.
This summer, Megan herself was a victim of gun violence after being shot and later named R&B singer Tory Lanez as the person who did it.
During the SNL performance, Megan halted the routine to play audio of a Malcolm X speech in which he said: ‘The disrespected, unprotected, neglected person in America is the black woman.
‘Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair, the colour of your skin, the shape of your nose? Who taught you to hate yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet?’
A clip was then played of Tamika Mallory calling out Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who has been criticised for his handling of the Taylor case. No police officers have been directly charged in relation to the death of Taylor, who was killed after officers stormed her apartment at night and fired off shots.
‘Daniel Cameron is no different than the sell out negros that sold our people into slavery,’ Tamika said.
Megan then took the microphone and added: ‘We need to protect our black women, and love our black women, ‘cause at the end of the day, we need our black women.
‘We need to protect our black men and stand up for our black men, ‘cause at the end of the day, we tired of seeing hashtags of our black men.’
The 25-year-old rapper was praised for the statement performance, with one SNL viewer tweeting: ‘Megan Thee Stallion said protect Black women and you better be listening.’
‘Oh my god Megan @theestallion went on SNL and called out @DanielCameronAG in front of the whole world,’ another reacted.
One viewer weighed in: ‘Megan twerked while fighting for justice and I don’t know anything better than that. Goodnight.’
SNL’s season 46 premiere was also hosted by Chris Rock, Colin Jost and Michael Che.
