John Legend came over all emotional as he dedicated his performance of single Never Break to his wife Chrissy Teigen, following news of her miscarriage.
Earlier this month, Chrissy and John told fans that they were in ‘deep pain’ after losing their third child.
The couple had been expecting a son, but following complications that saw Chrissy hospitalised, she sadly suffered a miscarriage – later opening up about their loss on social media in a moving post.
Taking to the stage at the Billboard Music Awards 2020 in the US on Wednesday night, John decided to dedicate his performance to his wife of 34 years.
Dressed in a white suit, he played the piano as he powerfully delivered the emotional tune, moving fans watching and the ceremony’s host Kelly Clarkson.
John was seen holding back tears as he sang the lyrics: ‘We will never break/ Built on a foundation/ Strong enough to stay/ We will never break.
‘As the water rises/ And the mountains shake/ Our love will remain.’
Host Kelly had reached out to John and Chrissy, telling the pair that ‘our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time.’
Of the performance, she said: ‘I want to take a moment to talk about a friend who inspires me on the daily. Not only as a musician, a songwriter, but as a human. John Legend is one of my favourite people on this planet and it’s easy for us all to feel that way about them because he and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world — the highs and the lows.’
Kelly continued: ‘Our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time and I’m thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with all of us for the very special performance, possibly my favourite of the night.’
Viewers watching at home praised John on Twitter, as they were moved to tears by his performance.
‘John Legend starts his Billboard performance of “Never Break” by saying, “this is for Chrissy” so naturally I’m now in tears,’ one fan tweeted.
Another said: ‘Just sitting here in tears after hearing John Legend perform on the Billboard Awards, my heart still breaks for him and Chrissy.’
Chrissy had shared raw photos of herself and John in hospital, as she explained to fans that they had lost their baby, who they named Jack.
She wrote: ‘We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.
‘To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you.’
The couple are also parents to daughter Luna, four, and son Miles, two.
