Jodie Whittaker is one of the latest celebs to delve into their family history on national TV for BBC series Who Do You Think You Are?

It’s sure to be a nerve-wracking experience having your family history laid out for viewers to see – especially when you encounter some uncomfortable truths like the Doctor Who star did.

However, the ever-chipper actress took it all in her stride, admitting to Metro.co.uk that the thing she was most nervous about was the whole story being ‘properly beige’.

‘I was really nervous – it sounds like narcissistic – I was really nervous it was going to be properly beige,’ Jodie laughed. ‘I got this thing like, “I’ve definitely got something. Like […] there’s gotta be some drama somewhere.”

‘And I was really nervous it was going to be like “Well that’s boring, isn’t it?!” And that I was going to have to drum up [a reaction] like “Oh!”, those kind of responses for however many days you film.

‘I was just really worried that I was gonna be like, “This is really boring!”‘

However, Jodie needn’t have worried, as her ancestors turned out to be anything but beige.

Spoilers for the new episodes have revealed that Jodie learns the poignant reality behind a family myth surrounding her great uncle’s sacrifice in World War I while unearthing some uncomfortable truths about her great-great grandfather in Yorkshire.

‘It was the opposite of that!’ she marvelled, before explaining: ‘I wasn’t nervous about finding out anything that was not necessarily comfortable, because you should.

‘You should know these things and these stories should be written down and they should be passed on. But they should be passed on with the correct information and in our family, we tend to like lose bits, not quite hear bits.

‘So now at least we’ve got the story. And also the story is open to interpretation which is interesting.’

Jodie is set to take on the new series alongside David Walliams, Ruth Jones, and Liz Carr.

The new series of Who Do You Think You Are? launches on BBC One this October.
