Over The Moon director Glen Keane has revealed how Hamilton star Phillipa Soo’s godless-like qualities helped shape her character in Netflix’s Over The Moon.

The new animated film sees the talented performer provide the voice for the character Chang’e, the legendary moon goddess in the Chinese mythology.

And Oscar-winning animator Keane revealed the star’s natural ‘entertainer spirit’ made her the perfect fit for the role.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘If you’ve ever met Phillipa Soo in person, she’s like a goddess in everything she does.

‘So much of Chang’e’s face was designed to reflect Phillipa. She has an entertainer spirit which came off in the way she moved and how she responded to everything.’

He continued: ‘She’s so aware of everything and as an entertainer, she is always responding to that impulse from her audience.’

The Netflix animation follows a young girl named Fei Fei, who uses her passion for science to a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of the moon goddess Chang’e.

There she realised the goddess isn’t exactly what she imagined and ends up on a quest surrounded by fantastical creatures.

Speaking about how Soo matched different aspects of Chang’e’s character, former Walt Disney animator Keane continued: ‘There’s that aspect of Phillippa that was so much like Chang’e, the nuclear version of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

‘But on the other hand, there was a real depth to her. And that there’d be times where she’d be performing and there would be tears. She really sensed the loss and sincerity of Chang’e. And that was the most difficult character to pull off in many ways.’

He continued: ‘She had to sell both sides of that and they both had to come off as realistic and not just acting. She’s truly an incredible artist.’

Over the Moon is available to stream on Netflix.
