Edinson Cavani’s agent has confirmed that the striker has an agreement to join Manchester United on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old has been without a club since his contract at Paris Saint-German expired earlier this summer and he is expected to undergo a medical with United on Sunday, with an official announcement likely to follow on Monday.
United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been using Anthony Martial as a No.9 in recent months and Cavani’s arrival would give the Red Devils greater options and competition up front for the new campaign.
It’s understood the Old Trafford giants have agreed a two-year deal with Cavani and his older brother and agent, Walter Guglielmone, did little to quash the rumours when asked about the Uruguayan’s future this weekend.
Pressed on the recent speculation, he told Inside Futbol: ‘It’s true.
‘There is an agreement [with Manchester United].’
Despite his age and lack of experience in the Premier League, there will be immediate pressure on Cavani to hit the ground running and score goals from the off given he’s been demanding wages of £210,000-a-week.
The attacker netted just seven goals in all competitions last term, his lowest tally since the 2007/08 season when he was playing for Palermo.
However, ex-United striker Louis Saha is confident Cavani will be a ‘top signing’ for his former club.
‘I thought Christmas was December,’ the Frenchman tweeted.
‘Cavani is a top signing. Goal scorer and huge source of energy inspiration.
‘Manchester United will dominate transition because of his work rate.’
