Dr Hilary Jones favours national lockdown instead of three-tier system: ‘We’re in a pandemic’

Dr Hilary Jones has said that he believes a second national lockdown would be better than the three-tier system in place.

The UK government has brought in a new three-tier system listing areas by their level of risk; medium, high and very high.

The restrictions get tighter in each tier, with level three banning mixing with friends and family outside of their household, while some business, including hospitality venues, gyms and leisure centres, will be forced to close.

Following speculation that areas in the south could be plunged into three-tier restrictions soon, Dr Hilary said that he thinks a second national lockdown would have a better impact than the current system in place.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Thursday, he said that it is likely restrictions will get tighter in the south: ‘We’ve seen rising numbers around the country, the south is just behind the north… we should pull together and support each other.

‘If we’re going to go into lockdown, I think it should be a national one. Get the numbers down, get the NHS prepared and increase the capacity in intensive care.

‘We can do a lot of planning now, which will help down the line in the future.’

Dr Hilary continued: ‘Rishi Sunak can say that another lockdown could do a great deal of harm. But, we’re in a pandemic.

‘There’s going to be harm either way, whether it’s in health or whether it’s in the economy, we have to face that this is a really tough time.

‘It’s a major pandemic and we have to accept that there’s going to be some pain and some harm done.’

Offering advice to those watching at home to stay safe, the medical professional, who was recently awarded an MBE, said: ‘People are seeking desperately some certainty and some clarity.

‘You can have all these tiers, but what people need to know is that the virus can only pass between human beings… you need to protect yourself and your family.

‘Avoid those who are flouting rules on a regular basis. those people are frequently on a daily basis coming into contact with people and they are the people you need to be avoid.’

There are currently over 650,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, with the number of deaths now reaching more than 43,000.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
