Chocolate week officially came to Great British Bake Off – and left a bitter taste in the bakers’ mouths in the latest episode.
Things went from sweet to sour for some contestants, as Sura was eliminated from the GBBO tent after her raw showstopper.
While fan favourite Lottie also had a bad week, with her brownies branded a ‘car crash’ and her babka landing her bottle of the pile in the technical.
On the flip side, Mark Lutton and Dave found themselves at the top of the pack, impressing judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
So, if you happened to miss the show for some reason, here’s what went down.
Who left Bake Off?
Sura was axed just before the halfway point of the competition, after a tough week in the tent.
The bakers were tasked with making a white chocolate celebration cake, but she found herself booted off when she served up a raw cake to the judges.
‘I’m gutted but, what’s done is done,’ she told the cameras. ‘I’m not going to be bitter about it.
‘I’ve had a great time.’
‘I’m really sad to see Sura go,’ Paul said. ‘Now that’s the classic case of, you cannot have a weakness in your baking if you’re going to win the Great British Bake Off.
‘Unfortunately, we saw Sura’s this week, and it’s that that actually saved Lottie.’
Who was named Star Baker?
Things were a little sweeter for Mark Lutton, who was named Star Baker, after delighting the judges with his signature, technical and showstopper challenges.
He beat out stiff competition from Dave for the crown in the very final moments.
Celebrating the honour, he confessed: ‘I just didn’t expect it.’
Lottie’s wet freezer juice
Lottie had a terrible time in the tent, suffering a disaster right from the off as she struggled with her brownies.
While all the bakers appeared to have a bad time with the treats, opting for fancy ingredients instead of bog standard chocolate offerings, Lottie included a topping she hadn’t really asked for – wet freezer juice.
Yum.
After leaving her brownies baking for a little longer than almost everyone else, she ran them over to the freezer to cool off.
And when she recovered them just moments before the judging, she announced to Noel that they were covered with slimy ‘freezer juice’.
Just what everyone wants on their brownies…
Paul’s critique was as savage as you’d expect, telling Lottie: ‘Flavour is okay, texture is all wrong and the presentation is terrible’.
Linda wins tough technical
It was Paul’s job to set this week’s technical, and he didn’t miss the opportunity to make things tough for the contestants – especially as those ‘easy’ brownies didn’t quite go to plan.
He instructed the bakers to whip up a chocolate babka, with some falling apart under the pressure.
Lottie found herself at the bottom of the pile, with Dave and Sura also rounding out the end of the list.
It was a different story for Linda, who turned her brownie disaster around and won the challenge, later thanking Paul for his ‘clear’ instructions.
But will anyone be thanking the judges next week?
Next week’s theme
The bakers will be returning to the tent for pastry week – marking the halfway point in the competition.
They will be getting to grips with a strenuous signature, a perplexing technical and an astonishing showstopper.
And we can’t wait to see what goes down.
Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays, at 8pm, on Channel 4.
