Michael McIntyre worried over face mask joke filmed before pandemic for new Netflix special: ‘Is this thing still funny?’

Michael McIntyre has been fretting for months over a face mask joke he made in his brand new Netflix special Michael McIntyre: Showman.

The comedian filmed his hour-long stand-up back at the beginning of March before the UK was forced into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, yet coincidentally he cracked a funny relating to face coverings ahead of them becoming mandatory.

In the special, Michael recalled a time when he went for a massage while on tour in Hong Kong and accidentally wore the disposable underwear as a face mask.

Yes, really.

‘I’d never seen these disposable massage pants before,’ he tells the audience. ‘I assumed it was a face mask, for my face.’

Speaking to Metro.co.uk ahead of the show’s launch, Michael said he had ‘no idea’ that the joke would become so topical some six months later.

‘It’s completely crazy,’ he said. ‘It would be completely normal now to have a massage [with a face mask]. Who would have thought that?

‘I mean, who would have thought half of this stuff… but yes, I had no idea.’

He continued: ‘I have to be honest with you, I’ve been worrying about it for months about whether that joke is still funny. I would wake my wife up in the middle of the night and go, “Is this thing funny?”

‘In Asia, they would wear those masks. I was gigging out there and a lot of people wore masks. I referred to them as pollution masks.

‘I had other jokes about it, and then now it’s commonplace and we’re all wearing these masks and it’s a completely reasonable mistake to make.’

Besides his face mask joke, Michael also makes light of his resemblance to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and he’s been stressing about that too.

‘You record something and don’t put it out for ages – even down to Kim Jong-un, is he alive? I don’t know what’s going on. I’m like, “Oh my god I’ve got that joke, I need him to survive until September,”

Michael McIntyre: Showman is available to stream on Netflix.
