John Lennon’s youngest son Sean Ono Lennon is set to interview Sir Paul McCartney in a special two-part radio show to mark what would have been his dad’s 80th birthday.

The late musician, who was killed in 1980, and Sir Paul were both members of The Beatles with Ringo Starr and George Harrison.

Macca opens up about the early days making music with Lennon, confessing that ‘there were a few songs that weren’t very good’.

‘Eventually, we started to write slightly better songs and then enjoyed the process of learning together so much that it really took off.’

Describing their first meeting, the vocalist shares: ‘I look back on it now like a fan, how lucky was I to meet this strange Teddy Boy off the bus, who played music like I did and we get together and boy, we complemented each other!

Sean will also chat to older brother Julian Lennon and Sir Elton John – who is Sean’s godfather – for the BBC Radio 2 programme, called John Lennon At 80.

Sir Elton joined Lennon on stage at Madison Square Garden in 1974, in what would be his final live gig, where he was also reunited with wife Yoko Ono, Sean’s mother.

Radio 2’s head of station Helen Thomas said: ‘John Lennon is one of the Radio 2 audience’s most popular and best-loved musicians, so we’re thrilled and honoured that Sean’s first ever radio programme in which he talks at length about his father, alongside his brother Julian, Paul McCartney and Elton John, will be broadcast on our network.’

Lennon’s 80th birthday is on October 9.

He was 40-years-old when he was shot four times outside his Manhattan apartment in 1980.

The news comes as Lennon’s killer Mark Chapman apologised to his widow Yoko Ono.

John Lennon At 80 airs October 3 and 4 at 9pm on BBC Radio 2 and will be available on BBC Sounds.
