Ewan McGregor has expressed his support for Scottish independence after the Brexit vote in 2016 changed his mind.

The actor had previously supported his home country staying in the Union, but now feels Scotland and England are ‘moving in different directions’ and ‘enough’s enough’.

Speaking on American topical talk show Real Time With Bill Maher, the 49-year-old said: ‘I was always for keeping the Union. I think it works. Then after the Brexit vote for sure changed my tune about it.

‘I think Scotland have been voting for a Government that they haven’t been given for years.

‘We’re a very left-voting country and we’ve been under Conservative rule through my childhood, and so I think, enough’s enough.

‘I think after the Brexit vote – I was in Scotland shooting the follow on to Trainspotting the night of the Brexit vote. The next day they showed people that voted for, to stay in the European Union, on the map in yellow and those that voted to leave were in blue.

‘The map was split in half. Scotland was yellow and England was blue, apart from a little bit around London. I just thought, that’s it.

The Moulin Rouge star continued: ‘Again the Scottish people want to stay in the European Union and the English don’t.

‘I just think we’re going in different directions. I think probably, it’s time. I think once Boris became prime minister, Scotland was like, “Right that’s it, we’re f*****g out of here”.’

A referendum on Scottish independence was held in 2014 with Scotland voting against becoming an independent country.

Ewan, who has not lived in Scotland since he was a teenager, spoke about his change of heart in 2016, saying the Brexit vote left him ‘totally confused’ on the issue.

‘I was worried that Scotland would flounder if it was on its own and I believed in the union and I felt like we were stronger together,’ he told Andrew Marr.

‘Then Brexit’s happened. Now I’m totally confused.’

He added that after seeing the Brexit vote in favour of leaving the European Union: ‘That next day I would have voted absolutely for Scotland to leave, I really would have done.’
