UFC president Dana White has hit out at Conor McGregor for sharing private messages between the pair on social media, while he appeared surprised by suggestions the Irishman could be fighting Manny Pacquiao.
On Friday, McGregor uploaded a series of screenshots from conversations with White from earlier this year in an attempt to prove he was eager and willing to fight.
The texts showed McGregor discussing a possible bout with Justin Gaethje as well as White denying a request to fight Diego Sanchez – even claiming the UFC would lose their promoter’s license if it happened.
White was clearly furious that McGregor had decided to share their private correspondence and feels the 32-year-old broke ‘man code’ by putting the DMs out into the public domain.
Asked about McGregor’s tweets at a press conference following Israel Adesanya’s win over Paulo Costa at UFC 253, White said: ‘Listen, I’ve had people blowing me up left and right.
‘Everybody here knows, even the ladies, this is some man code stuff, you know? It’s just something you don’t do. It’s one of the dirtiest things you can do.
‘We were just talking about Diego Sanchez. Diego Sanchez is in there in a private conversation I was having with Conor.
‘When you’re the number two or three ranked guy in the world and you’re telling me you want to fight but you want to fight unranked, 39-year-old Diego Sanchez in a main event in Los Angeles – no.’
McGregor has also been creating headlines after claiming he would be fighting legendary Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, with the latter’s camp confirming the bout and revealing that part of the proceeds will go towards fighting coronavirus in the Philippines.
Although White was involved in McGregor’s last crossover super fight with Floyd Mayweather, he says he has no knowledge of the Pacquiao fight and was under the impression the Irishman had retired.
Asked about the potential fight, the UFC chief replied: ‘I have no idea. Listen, you guys have been asking me about Conor McGregor forever. Did you see Conor McGregor’s tweet? The retirement tweet. “I’m retired”. Birthday cake, “I’m retired”.’
