‘We’re going on lockdown!’ Connie Beauchamp (Amanda Mealing) dramatically announces in tonight’s Casualty.
The presence of the ‘L’ word and the sight of people in haz-mat suits is presumably why this episode was pulled from its original scheduled date in April, just as the country locked down for real and medics in full PPE became a scarily common sight.
This means that we’re going to need a little bit of context about where we were in the story when this episode was originally meant to be shown.
Fenisha (Olivia D’Lima) has just discovered she’s pregnant and told Will (Jack Nolan) he isn’t the father. Charlie (Derek Thompson) is wandering – and sleeping on – the streets of Holby after quitting his job in the aftermath of Duffy’s death. And Jacob (Charles Venn) and Connie’s relationship is still strictly professional.
It’s an action-packed episode that starts with the eery sight of an unconscious woman being found in a field. Her symptoms are mysterious and she doesn’t respond to any of the usual treatments.
As another unconscious person is found, the ED staff realise that they’re possibly dealing with a terrorist incident – and Connie orders the entire ED into lockdown, calling a ‘Code Orange.’
There are frightening scenes of our regular characters having to don full protective kit, and dealing with the extra pressures this brings to an already fraught situation. Some staff members find the pressure getting to them in unexpected ways.
Meanwhile Marty (Shaheen Jafargholi) has to take an HIV test after sleeping with an infected partner, and he’s shocked to see his father Graham (Philip Wright) in the ED.
They’ve not been on good terms since his father made it clear that he can’t accept his son being gay. But on this extraordinary day, can father and son reach an understanding before it’s too late?
And Ethan (George Rainsford) gets some shocking news.
