Carole Baskin may have found herself in the bottom two on Dancing With The Stars, but she narrowly avoided being the first celebrity to leave after being saved by the judges.
Tuesday night saw the show’s first elimination air over in the US and the Tiger King star found herself at risk of going home, alongside Charles Oakley and his professional partner Emma Slater.
After combining all the votes and the scores from the judges, Carole and the NBA star were told they weren’t safe and it was down to the panel to decide which of them would make it through to the next round of the competition.
The panel were told by host Tyra Banks to make their decision on both the opening week performances and last night’s performances.
Carrie-Ann Inaba kicked things off, deciding to save Carole, as she told the Big Cats Rescue owner: ‘The couple I want to save because they did better this week in their dance is Carole and Pasha [Pashkov].’
Bruno then gave his verdict and tied the vote by opting to save Charles. He told the pair making his decision was ‘never easy’.
That left the deciding vote to Derek Hough, who is replacing former judge Len Goodman on the panel this season, and he was rushed to make a decision, telling Tyra: ‘The couple I want to save is Carole and Pasha.’
Earlier in the evening, Carole had performed the Viennese waltz, again to another aptly chosen song Tom Jones’ What’s New Pussycat.
Carole previously found herself bottom of the leaderboard during week one, after earning herself 11 points for her paso doble.
This week, she improved on her score and was given 16 out of 30 by the judges, with Carrie Ann telling the Netflix star she ‘really liked’ her waltz.
‘Yes, it was simple, but Dancing With the Stars is also a platform for people to get to know you, and for you to grow and evolve. And this is how you do it, on the dance floor, bringing these beautiful dances,’ she said.
Viewers watched as Carole had broken down in tears ahead of her performance, as she touched on the scrutiny she has found herself under after appearing on Tiger King.
Carole revealed that the negativity she has been subjected to has meant her daughter can no longer read the news.
Following her DWTS debut, Carole had hit back at her haters in a defiant interview.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said: ‘Spending time worrying about what I’m doing is probably not a really good use of your time. I’m not worried about what people say because even when they’re saying things that [are] negative, it’s keeping the conversation out there [about cats] in the public eye.
‘As long as I can keep that conversation out there, I can keep the cats in the spotlight and that’s my goal.’
