Cam Norrie booked his spot in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time on Wednesday as he backed up his gruelling win over Diego Schwartzman with a straightforward victory against Federico Coria at the US Open.
Norrie won 6-3 6-4 6-4 to go further than he’d ever been in a major, showing no signs of physical rust after a five-set epic against ninth seed Schwartzman on the opening day.
Despite a solid enough display, Norrie is certain there is more to come from him during his stay in New York but he is delighted with his focused attitude on court.
‘I’m pretty satisfied,’ Norrie told Amazon Prime. ‘I didn’t play anywhere near my best tennis today but I went again with a really good attitude and managed to serve well and play some clutch tennis on the break points in the third set.
‘It’s great to be in the third round, first time for me. It’s even better doing it when not even playing my best tennis. I’m just really pumped with my attitude earlier.
‘Honestly I felt great, obviously I had a lot of time over lockdown to prepare and get myself physically ready. I’ve been working really hard with my fitness trainer Vasek. I’m feeling physically great.
‘To get through that match today was great especially after having such a big win against Schwartzman on Monday. I was pleased to back it up.
‘It’s always tough when you have such a high like that and then get yourself up for the next one. I was happy to get through in straight sets and save the legs a little bit.
‘I don’t know how I’m going to play next but it’s going to be a tough match.’
His next opponent is 21-year-old Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who shocked 24th seed Hubert Hurkacz in four sets.
This is also his debut in the third round of a major and one will make their bow in the last-16 in New York.
‘He’s a young kid, up and coming,’ added Norrie. ‘He hits the ball huge. He’s good on all surfaces and he’s a reallly flashy player.
‘I expect him to come out firing, it’s going to be another tough match. He obviously beat Hubert who was playing some great tennis, too.
‘So it’s going to be a tough one and another battle. I’m looking forward to it and just happy to be playing in the third round.’
