Frank Lampard admits there could be ‘movement’ over the futures of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Antonio Rudiger in the coming days.
The pair were left out of Chelsea’s 6-0 win against Barnsley at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday as Lampard’s side booked their place into the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
Loftus-Cheek started in Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Brighton on the opening weekend of the season but he lasted just an hour on the south coast and was heavily criticised for his performance.
Rudiger is yet to play a single minute for the club this season and he’s been left out of the last three squads entirely.
Though Lampard refused to confirm whether the pair could leave on a permanent basis or simply on loan, the Chelsea boss did confirm there could be ‘movement’ on the duo’s futures.
‘The situation with both is that they weren’t in the squad. I had a similar answer from the other day, they just weren’t in the squad. That is just a choice at the moment,’ said Lampard.
‘Again with the centre-halves I can’t have them all in the squad. I keep getting asked about the size of the squad.
‘There might be movement, we know that, but nothing is concrete so don’t read too much into those selections at the minute.
‘It will have to be things which are right for the club and individuals and me and in terms of what happens in the next couple of weeks.’
Lampard confirmed after the win that Chelsea are close to completing their seventh signing of the summer in the form of Edouard Mendy.
The Rennes goalkeeper underwent a medical in Germany ahead of signing for the club, in a deal that could eventually rise to around £24m.
‘The medical I think is done and complete,’ said Lampard.
‘I want to be a bit careful with that. I don’t want to give absolute confirmation, but possibly over the next 24 hours. It seems like one which is done.’
