‘You are safer at home,’ warns doctor as he explains dangers of travelling on planes

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has implemented travel restrictions on popular holiday destinations including Spain, the Netherlands and France.

However, while Brits are starting to travel to other countries again, a doctor has warned tourists that they are safer to stay at home.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Dr Karan Rangarajan spoke about the dangers of flying and why planes are not 100% risk free.

He said: ‘So, planes have the same air filters we have in operating environments so I spend my day operating we have these filters which are high efficiency and provide a laminate flow.

‘That means the air is constantly flowing from the ceilings to the ground and the air is cleansed and renewed every minute.’

The expert, who recently went viral on TikTok, added: ‘And it is filled with smaller particles including respiratory droplets and virus particles as well.

‘As efficient as they can be, it doesn’t eliminate risk 100%, like we can’t eliminate the risk of germs in an operating theatre 100%.’

Dr Karan went on to say how the environment may look safe and familiar like that of a pub or restaurant, however, made sure to reiterate the point that is is more dangerous.

‘At the end on the day,’ he pressed. ‘You’re still stuck in a steel box 1000 feet in the air with several dozens of people and you know, you’re safer at home.

‘My feeling is essential travel should be just that: essential. Nonessential travel like going on a stag do things like that, I think that should be avoided.’

In April, the doctor went viral on the social media platform TikTok where he explained why people shouldn’t wear surgical gloves in public.

‘You’ve got your gloves, you’re at the supermarket, you’re touching things – there you go… germs,’ he told his followers. ‘You keep touching more things throughout same day with these same gloves, germs everywhere. You’re accumulating germs.

‘Your glove is now more full of germs than your hand would’ve been if you washed each time.

‘Remember, with these same gloves you’ll be touching your steering wheel, you might accidentally touch your face, transferring the germs to yourself.’

Dr Karan continued: ‘And then when your’re changing the gloves you might actually be touching the glove itself. Just wash your hands, be sensible, stay safe.’

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.
