Paul Scholes has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to spend big this summer in order for Manchester United to take the next step under his leadership and win titles next season.
Scholes watched his former side crash out of the Europa League on Sunday night, losing a dramatic semi-final against Sevilla 2-1.
United were the dominant force in the encounter but failed to find the back of the net after an early Bruno Fernandes penalty and a late Luuk de Jong suckerpunch denied them a return to the Europa League final.
Scholes felt the Red Devils performed well on the night despite defeat but insists money needs to be invested heavily this summer – with a centre-forward and Jadon Sancho the priority – if they are to lift triophies in the 20/21 season.
Scholes told BT Sport: ‘I don’t think they played badly, I thought they were really good tonight against a really good Sevilla team.
‘But that 15-20 minutes after half time with all those chances, you’ve got to score them.
‘We talk about quality, we talk about spending money on a centre forward and wide players.
‘We talk about hundreds of millions these days to get these players, but these are the players that win you trophies, these are the ones that win you medals.
‘We know all this Sancho stuff is going on, they need to spend more money.
‘If they want to win trophies, they’ve got to start spending the money.
‘They created chances tonight but if you think of Sancho in that team tonight I think United are scoring.’
Scholes has previously suggested that Harry Kane would be a fine addition and insists the Tottenham Hotspur striker would improve Anthony Martial.
‘Hopefully it’ll make him better (having competition), Scholes said. ‘There’s no reason why you can’t have competition in the team.
‘You think of the great teams down the years, you have three or four centre-forwards. What’s wrong with that? There’s no doubting he’s been sensational in the last few weeks.
‘Players like Fernandes make players like Martial better. Before Fernandes came, United couldn’t create a chance, but now they can because they have a player who looks forward and wants to create chances, he wants to get involved with goals.
‘He (Martial) has great ability, he can score all types of goals. Before lockdown, he didn’t look like a centre-forward who was desperate to score goals. I think now he does. It’s come from nowhere.
‘The ability, the feet, the intricate play, the link-up he’s got with Marcus, Mason and Bruno is sensational. You just can’t defend it. If he gets faced onto a centre-half, I don’t see how he doesn’t go past him and create a chance.
‘We weren’t really sure what he was – was he a wide player, a centre-forward? But now he looks like he wants to score goals, like a Ruud van Nistelrooy, or an Andy Cole.’
