A mother is facing jail after single-handedly digging her way towards a Ukrainian prison to free her son, who is serving a life sentence for murder. The 51-year-old woman rented a house located near the jail in Zaporizhia, in south-east Ukraine. Working at night, she used shovels and pickaxes to dig towards the jail but was eventually caught and arrested.

Kitten rescued from three cars in one day 

A kitten had to be rescued from three vehicles in one day after it kept climbing into engines. Rescuers in the Norfolk town of King’s Lyyn had to partially dismantle each of the vehicles and the entire operation took several hours. The RSCPA said: “This kitten was proving a little Houdini - but there's no way we could leave her in any of the vehicles or alone in the middle of a busy town centre, so we just had to try again!”

Detectorist strikes silver at local pub 

A metal detectorist made the discovery of his life behind his local pub. Luke Mahoney, who runs his own metal detector shop, Joan Allen Electrics in Lindsey, Suffolk, picked up £100,000 worth of silver civil war era coins in the field behind the Lindsey Rose pub. “That feeling of scraping the dirt away and seeing the coins is indescribable,” Mahoney said.
