Kate Garraway suggested people judged her for laughing during husband Derek Draper’s coma heartache.
The 53-year-old has been battling for his life since March, after being diagnosed with coronavirus.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain after a few days off, Kate opened up about her return to the ITV series, while her partner is still gravely ill.
The host was discussing a paramedic being trolled for posting a selfie while working on the frontline, when she told co-star Adil Ray: ‘We’ve talked about this, with me doing this show.
‘If we’re having a laugh and a joke, because that’s our job in the morning, to cheer everybody up in the pandemic, people then say, “Hang on, does that mean you’re not worried about Derek or you’re not feeling sad about it?”

‘Maybe it’s that? Obviously she’s professional and doing her job, and they see her do that and think, “Why are you posting and posing and when you should be saving lives?”
‘Not really understanding that we’re all human and the most important thing is that we need to laugh and smile.
‘Nothing warrants this abuse.’
Elsewhere on the show, Kate, 53, opened up about commemorating her husband’s birthday as he continues his recovery.
Derek was rushed for treatment at the end of March, and was put into a coma just days later as his symptoms worsened.
While he is now coronavirus free, the illness ‘wreaked havoc’ on his body – and he has remained in hospital ever since.
And, opening up on his birthday celebrations, the I’m A Celebrity star explained that it was a ‘challenging’ time for herself and their two children, William and Darcey.
‘It was Derek’s birthday on Saturday as well, which was obviously a challenging one under the circumstances,’ she continued.
‘We managed to FaceTime him and sing happy birthday, we had a cake which we had on FaceTime.
‘It’s very challenging, they’re [the kids] are doing brilliantly with it though. We just thought for us, we did it with Derek’s family as well, we managed to hook up technically and sing happy birthday.
‘We just hope the love seeps through.’
Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays, at 6am, on ITV.
