Good Morning Britain doctor warns of risk of catching coronavirus from food packaging

Good Morning Britain’s Dr Sarah Jarvis has warned viewers there may be a chance of catching coronavirus from food packaging, following recent outbreaks at factories.

Following the news that over 300 workers at the Greencore factory in Northampton, which supplies Marks & Spencer with sandwiches, had tested positive for coronavirus, the doctor admitted that it may be possible to catch the virus from food packaging.

When asked by Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher whether it makes a difference if it is cooked food or something you eat cold like a sandwich, Dr Sarah explained: ‘Theoretically, even if something is cooked, if the packaging is made up – and we know that for instance in New Zealand they think that the latest outbreak they have had may have come in on packaging rather than through people.

‘Yes, there is a risk. It does remind us that, for instance, the virus can survive – we think – for 24 hours on cardboard, and up to three days on hard metal and hard plastic.

‘So we do know that there are risks, we do seem to have seen quite a lot of outbreaks in meat processing factories and in various other food processing areas.’

She added that the outbreaks may be more to do with the way factory workers interact with each other rather than it spreading more in food plants than other industries.

Dr Sarah explained: ‘Interestingly, it’s not always been food, in some other countries it was a shoe plant.

‘In the UK it does seem – we think – that there is a link between the way in which people travel to work, where they live.

‘A lot of people who work in these processing plants will travel to work together, they’ll work together and come home together, they’ll socialise together and they’ll live together and it may be more to do with that.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
