Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) will seemingly be a new man when EastEnders returns, as he becomes a fully-fledged police officer.
Callum revealed his hopes and dreams of becoming a police officer earlier this year, and it’s safe to say it didn’t go down to well with boyfriend Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden).
However, he stood his ground, fought for what he believed in and pursued his dreams — determined to get what he wants.
With lockdown having resulted in the soap taking a break from screens, viewers have been wondering what’s next for Callum — and if he’s able to make things work with Ben given his gangster boyfriend could be seen as a conflict of interest.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about what viewers can expect, actor Tony Clay said: ‘Callum has been fast tracked in the police, he’s full blown now in the mix, starting his new career.
‘Naturally that causes its own issues down the line. He is always trying to do the right thing but the heart wants what the heart wants. And then you have Ben and his dad – he couldn’t have picked any worse! Nah, I’m kidding!
‘You will see a new side of him – he is growing into himself and his new job and the adventures he will have.’
Of course, Ben’s penchant for dodgy dealings will continue to a huge source of conflict for Callum, as he’s torn between love and duty.
Tony told us: ‘[He will be] Massively conflicted I think. You will see a new side to Callum – job or his love life?
‘ Family is everything. How does Callum fit into that with Ben and Phil? He’s never had that, he’s come from a broken home but he is being welcomed. into the fold. A lot of twists and turns.’
EastEnders returns Monday, September 7 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
