Dr Hilary Jones insists young people are ‘driving coronavirus pandemic’

Dr Hilary Jones has insisted that young people are ‘driving the coronavirus pandemic’.

The UK Covid-19 death toll has hit more than 41,000, while lockdown measures have recently been eased – with pubs and restaurants opening around the country.

However, the health expert has suggested that the condition is being ‘driven’ by younger members of society who see themselves as ‘less vulnerable’.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, he told Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray: ‘What we are seeing is a pandemic driven by people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, without doubt.

‘It’s the young adults, and middle-aged adults that are driving the pandemic.

‘Other people, in older age groups for example, are almost carrying out their own risk assessments, saying, “We’re going to stay away from those areas and situations where we’re more likely to be exposed to the virus.

‘Younger people are saying, “Actually, we don’t feel that we’re vulnerable so we’ll go out to socials, gatherings, pubs and restaurants, and we’re not so concerned.”’

‘The trouble is the WHO say they’re the ones driving the pandemic,’ the 67-year-old continued.

‘There’s a spill over bringing the virus to more vulnerable people.

‘Definitely we’re seeing an increase of cases in the middle-age groups, less transmissions and infections in the older age groups, because they’re doing their own risk assessments, they’re adopting their own rules.’

Dr Hilary returned to GMB this week, after a much-needed holiday to France.

Making his comeback on yesterday’s instalment, he revealed that he had jetted back home well before quarantine measures were re-introduced – in which holidaymakers were instructed to isolate for 14 days on their return from France.

‘I was back about 10 days ago. I don’t need to be incarcerated just yet,’ he told viewers. ‘I was aware they were talking about imposing quarantine at some point.

‘I had a little staycation in this country as well. I had a nice break.’

‘If you want to take a holiday during a pandemic, you have to understand that risk and you have to face the fact you might have to quarantine,’ he added.

‘That could affect your job and your children going back to school.’

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays at 6am, on ITV.
