Wilford Brimley has died aged 85.
The actor, who is best known for starring in films such as Cocoon and The Thing, died on Sunday morning at his home in Utah, his manager has confirmed.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Brimley’s manager Lynda Bensky revealed the movie star hadn’t been well and had been in intensive care in the days before he died.
Bensky said: ‘Wilford Brimley was a man you could trust. He said what he meant and he meant what he said.
‘He had a gruff exterior and a tender heart. I’m sad that I will no longer get to hear my friend’s wonderful stories.’
‘[Brimley] was one of a kind,’ his manager added.
Brimley was famous for appearing in the TV adverts for Quaker Oats – encouraging fans to eat cereal because it’s ‘the right thing to do’.
Tributes have flooded in for the star since news of his death broke, with The Lat Show host Stephen Colbert tweeting: ‘RIP Wilford Brimley – so many great performances, but I’ll never forget seeing him sing this surprisingly tender “It’s Not Easy Being Green” (sic).’
Actress Betty Buckley said: ‘So sad to read this. I loved Wilford Brimley. It was a gift to get to work with him in the film ” Tender Mercies.” Great actor! #RIP Wilford. (sic)’
