Happy World UFO Day 2020 – yes, it’s a thing.
Just a few short months after the ‘Storm Area 51’ craze in September, which already feels a world away, it’s time to celebrate all things aliens once again.
World UFO Day seeks to raise awareness of the little green dudes which may or may not be out there, and many will look to the skies to see if they can see any unidentified flying objects.
This World UFO Day, we’ve got what you need to know about your chances of actually seeing something up there based on where you live and alleged sightings which have previously been reported in your area…
Have there been any UFO ‘sightings’ in your area?
According to UFOStalker.com, there have been 61 sightings in the world in the last week alone, and 363 in the last month.
They have collected all the sightings reported to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) – an American organisation which investigates strange sightings in the sky.
Their site also collects the details of the sightings, with one London-based UFO-spotter writing: ‘I saw a light flashing in the sky’ on May 20, while a person in Hertfordshire reported seeing ‘a metallic object rising up rotating with sun reflecting’ on June 18.
Meanwhile a user in Yate reported seeing a ‘Small orb (elevating up and down) trailing a slow moving larger orb travelling south to north west side of Yate’.
Another sighting from Leicester in April reads: ‘Multiple lights that looked like star, some travelling in pairs keeping exact distance from each other horizontallly, both moving at same velocity.’
According to Fresh Student Living – which used a Freedom of Information Request to access data from the RAF – London, Kent, Lancashire Derbyshire and Essex were the top five UFO hotspots in the UK from the last year they were collecting data, with 54, 30, 24, 22 and 22 sightings respectively.
The UFO-report-tracking branch of the organisation was shut down in 2009, however, so the data is over a decade old and should, therefore, be taken with an even larger pinch of salt.
In terms of wider areas, the Midlands seemed to be doing pretty well as there were 109 sightings between counties such as Derbyshire, Warwickshire and Lincolnshire.
If you want to better your chances of seeing a UFO, apparently the best time to spot one was between 8pm and midnight based on that RAF data.
If you want to have a closer look for sightings in your area, you can have a play with the map on UFOStalker.com.
