Strictly Come Dancing’s annual Christmas special will apparently not air this year.
While the main series this year hasn’t been derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic, measures put in place for the safety of its stars and dancers may mean that a Yuletide one-hour programme just won’t be possible this year.
Strictly is now a welcome presence on BBC One on Christmas Day, in a festive one-off competition which mostly sees new stars and familiar faces from series past compete for a trophy, with last year’s special being won by Debbie McGee.
A source told the Daily Star: ‘Usually, filming the Christmas special only takes a few days.
‘But to do it under the current guidelines would mean quarantining celebs for two weeks beforehand. It’s just not worth it for one episode.’
This follows reports that in order for the 2020 series of Strictly to go ahead, both the new celebrity contestants and their professional dance partners will have to self-isolate for up to two weeks in order to take part in the competition.
One big change that could be coming to Strictly this year, however, is (finally) the introduction of same-sex couples into the competition.
Following on from Johannes Radebe and Grazianno Di Prima’s same-sex dance last year, bosses are apparently now keen to introduce both all-male and all-female couplings into the race for the Glitterball trophy.
It’s also now looking likely that long-time judge Bruno Tonioli will miss this year’s edition entirely so he can stay in Los Angeles, where he also judges Dancing With The Stars.
And, like us, Rylan Clark-Neal is backing Cheryl all the way to replace Bruno.
Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
