Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks has expressed her regret over not getting to share the stage with the group’s co-founder Peter Green, who has died aged 73.

Green solicitors’ Swan Turton announced on Saturday that the music legend died in his sleep.

Nicks, who joined the group in 1975 after Green left, said in a statement on Twitter that she wishes she performed alongside him.

She said: ‘I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Peter Green. My biggest regret is that I never got to share the stage with him.I always hoped in my heart of hearts that that would happen.

‘When I first listened to all the Fleetwood Mac records, I was very taken with his guitar playing. It was one of the reasons I was excited to join the band.

‘His legacy will live on forever in the history books of Rock n Roll. It was in the beginning, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and I thank you, Peter Green, for that.

‘You changed our lives…’

The announcement, from Swan Turton, read ‘It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announce his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep.

‘A further statement will be provided in the coming days.’

However, he left the group after a performance three years later, following a struggle with mental health issues – and Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined shortly after.

Peter was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and took time out of the spotlight to seek treatment. He later re-emerged and formed the Peter Green Splinter Group alongside Nigel Watson and Cozy Powell, in the late ’90s – with the band releasing nine albums overall.
