Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not expecting ‘lots of surgery’ on his squad in the next transfer window, although there will be signings as he looks to improve on his current options.
The Red Devils are on a superb 16 match unbeaten run and are looking increasingly likely to secure a Champions League place for next season.
United are fifth in the table, but a win over struggling Aston Villa on Thursday night will see them move just one point behind Leicester in fourth with four games to go. The Red Devils and the Foxes meet on the final day of the season which could be a hugely important clash.
Despite having some massive games coming up, including an FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea on 19 July, attention is turning to summer signings.
United have been linked with a host of players, including Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, Donny van de Beek and Kalidou Koulibaly, but Solskjaer insists there will be wave of signings.
Given the impressive form of his side, the Norwegian does not want to overhaul his squad, but there will be some fine tuning.
‘I don’t think it’s going to be lots of surgery, no,’ Solskjaer told Sky Sports.
‘I think it’s fine adjusting of course but we’re always looking to improve and we know we’re behind where we want to be.’
Paul Pogba’s return from injury and impressive form may keep United from dipping into the transfer market for a midfielder as the Frenchman looks likely to remain at the club when previously an exit had seemed probable.
Pogba has been combining in midfield with Bruno Fernandes and Nemanja Matic to great effect, while Scott McTominay and Fred provide other options off the bench.
Solskjaer is hopeful a new contract with the Pogba can be agreed and he maintains all his superb midfield options, with his current deal expiring next year but United holding an option for another year.
‘I can’t comment on discussions between player and the club but. of course, we want to keep the best players around the club,’ said Solskjaer.
‘We want to build a squad for the future and Scott [McTominay] and Nemanja [Matic] are a similar position but at different stages in their careers. One at the start, one really experienced one.
‘We also need players in the mid-range group. Hopefully we can do something. I know that since Paul’s come back he’s looking better and better. He’s enjoying his football and let’s see where it takes us.’
