Law & Order: SVU stars Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay have finally given fans the first-look at the hotly-anticipated Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler reunion.
Stabler and Benson will be back together again in the season 22 premiere, with Stabler returning to the SVU universe thanks to a new spinoff series – and it looks as though they’ve put aside their differences.
Getting fans excited for the upcoming milestone moment, Hargitay posted a picture of the duo together.
In the photo, the couple smile for the camera while Hargitay holds onto Meloni’s hand.
‘It’s on,’ she captioned the snap.
Fans were delighted by the picture, with one enthusing: ‘I can’t wait see you two together again. And this comes from a fan of yours that watched Law And Order SVU from the very start.
‘I went though a lot of cast members. Coming and going. This should say a lot about this fan right Mariska.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘I’ve had a really hard week. This picture makes me deliriously happy! Love you both.’
SVU showrunner Warren Leight teased that the reunion was on the horizon on The Law & Order: SVU podcast.
‘It’s pretty clear that Elliot will be in the SVU season opener,’ he revealed.
‘I think that much I know. Whether we get to see his family as well remains to be seen.’
Leight continued: ‘We had heard distant thunder about Chris Meloni coming back in the fall and we were going to lay a little groundwork for that.
‘We were going to see [his wife] Kathy Stabler come back very upset. Her son had been rolled by a team of ne’er-do-wells and may have been drugged, and we were going to revisit [Benson’s half-brother] Simon’s seeming overdose and we were going to get to know the stresses on the Stablers – what had happened to the Stabler family after Elliot both left SVU and apparently left them.’
