If, like me, you’re a sucker for ‘swipe up’ Insta story ads, you’ll definitely have seen the BaeVac (or other iterations of it from different brands).
With the promise of sucking your blackheads clean from your face and giving you the feeling of a fresh facial with a simple swipe, what’s not to love?
But before you do the thing and buy your own suction blackhead remover, Is It Worth the Faff? is here to try before you buy.
Save your swiping until you’ve read our verdict.
What is the BaeVac Skin Exfoliator?
This little gadget looks kind of like a sex toy, comprising of a handle and various heads.
It’s made by a company called SilkyBae, who claim the benefits include:
- Diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Reducing the appearance of pore size
- Diminishing the appearance of blemishes
- Evening out skin texture
- Reducing the appearance of dark spots
We were sent this one to review, but if you bought it yourself from SilkyBae it’d run you £24.99. There are other similar products on the market with differing features and prices.
The device uses ‘mild suction’ to literally pull the dead skin and sebum from your pores, with you dragging it over your face.
Faff involved?
The BaeVac itself is easy to use. You put one of the heads on and turn it on. There are three settings of intensity, but I just used the first one as my skin is pretty sensitive.
From there, you run it across your face wherever your skin is most congested.
Here’s where I made my first mistake. I used the biggest head, which you’re supposed to graduate up to. Although I’d tried the smaller ones before I got a bit ahead of myself.
The suction got stuck to my face and I’ve ended up with a nozzle shaped bruise across my cheek. Not ideal.
The results
I wish I could look past this big bruise, but alas I cannot fully. I already have broken capillaries and wanted a more even tone, so this – which looks like someone has swiped soot across my face – has had the opposite effect.
On the flipside, though, my skin does feel very clear.
It’s gross but satisfying seeing the gunk come out of your skin and into the nozzle (remember to wash before each use).
Plus, when I tried the microdermabrasion head – even after my bruise, I know I’m brave – the suction didn’t feel as uncomfortable and it was much easier to pull across the face.
Many of us have the tendency to think there a loads of blackheads on our nose, when actually they’re often just sebaceous filaments, so don’t fall into the trap of leaving the BaeVac on for ages.
Speaking from experience, as gunky as your skin might be, you can’t physically remove your pores and will only irritate your skin.
Is the BaeVac blackhead remover worth the faff?
I love the feeling of a double cleanse, when you run your hands after your face and the skin texture is all buttery and soft. My skin definitely felt soft as that after using the BaeVac.
However, even though it was me that should have used a different head when starting out, I’m still wary of recommending something that can leave a big bruise slap bang in the middle of your face.
It’s not a faffy product in general, but the results can be achieved with a good cleanser and a chemical exfoliate once a week.
If you’re the type of person who loves the idea of seeing the exact amount of ‘stuff’ coming out of your skin – and you don’t have chubby cheeks that get stuck in the suction head – then this could be the product for you.
Sadly I am not that person.
