The Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps – who once used fake names to run and promote an internet business – opted to go against his own government’s advice by forgoing the joys of a ‘staycation’ for a holiday in Spain.
Embarrassingly, while he was still there, Spain experienced a surge in coronavirus cases, causing the *stifles sniggers* Department of Transport to insist on travellers returning from there to the UK placing themselves into quarantine for 14 days.
BREAKING: We have a new contender for the "you couldn't write this stuff" stakes
Transport Sec Grant Shapps is on holiday in Spain. He will, therefore, have to quarantine for 14 days when he gets home.

Needless to say, the awkward incident did not get a free pass from Twitter.

BREAKING: Grant Shapps will *not* have to self quarantine on his return from Spain if he can find a travel corridor and make an air bridge to Barnard Castle

I’m sure I’m the millionth person to ask, but if Grant Shapps is quarantined will Michael Green & Sebastian Fox still be turning up for work?

OK, I admit it – the only reason we introduced the 14 day #Quarantine for people returning from Spain is because that's where Grant Shapps is currently on holiday.

LATEST: People who break mask rules in shops will be forced to quarantine with Grant Shapps for 2 weeks, Government say.

Grant Shapps might not even be in Spain. He might be using one of his other passports. He is, after all, the Jason Bourne of toss.

Grant Shapps is currently in Spain but, of course, he won't have to quarantine when he comes back because by the time he gets here, Spain will actually be redesignated a large restaurant and as long as he's sitting down, he won't need to wear a mask. Have I understood this right?

Minister Grant Shapps can presumably avoid having to quarantine on return from Spain by telling us, in PM’s Garden, that he was only in Spain:
To get childcare, which he later found he didn’t need &
To test his eye sight on his wife’s birthday &
The rules just don’t apply to him— nazir afzal (@nazirafzal) July 25, 2020

I’ve got a joke about the transport secretary but you’ll have to wait 14 days to hear it.

James Felton painted a very different picture.
You know when you say “I could use another holiday to recover from that holiday” and then you change the quarantine law to enforce that https://t.co/j8eojt6mN6

It was probably Michael Green’s idea.
