George RR Martin has broken his word on the finish date for his new Game Of Thrones book, meaning fans are officially permitted to ‘imprison him’.

Last May, the author announced his hopes that The Winds Of Winter would be completed by this year’s World Con and that if it wasn’t, he would allow his supporters to lock him up in a small cabin.

Unfortunately for Martin, World Con was due to take place on July 29, 2020 (although it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic).

Writing on his blog in 2019, George penned: ‘As for finishing my book… I fear that New Zealand would distract me entirely too much.

‘Best leave me here in Westeros for the nonce.

‘But I tell you this — if I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done.’

He concluded: ‘Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.

Although The Winds Of Winter isn’t quite ready yet, Martin revealed an update on its progress in June.

Sharing a blog update, the 71-year-old writer, revealed he was making some ‘steady progress’ on the sixth book in the A Song Ice And Fire series.

‘I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week,’ he posted.

However, Martin did warn fans not to get too excited just yet, as he explained it is a ‘huge book’ and wouldn’t be released anytime soon – even though he’s been working on the tale for 10 years.

‘But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week,’ the scribe went on. ‘It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.’

Good things come to those who wait, right?
