Jamie Tate (Alexander Lincoln) is going to have to become ruthless if he is going to get what he wants in Emmerdale – which is the opposite of being stuck in a marriage with his wife Andrea (Anna Nightingale).
At the moment, Andrea has the upper hand as she has made it clear to both Jamie and his affronted mum Kim (Claire King) that she is control and from now on, they have to do everything she says.
The alternative? She will drop Jamie in it over the hit and run that almost killed Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb), meaning he would end up in prison away from daughter Millie – and also the woman he truly loves, Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper).
So how will Jamie get out of this one? If you thought he was too much of a wet blanket to fight back, then you might have to reconsider – as he is about to discover that Tate edge that means his mum always comes up smelling of roses.
Alexander teased: ‘With Jamie, I’ve had a huge scope of things to play with. He’s been very combative towards his mum, but has then gone back underneath her wing.
‘There’s also been some really emotional scenes in the love triangle with Belle and Andrea, and having his daughter Millie around.
‘It’s been really great, but now with this new side of him coming out, we’re showing the Tate edge of Jamie and it’s brilliant. It’s great fun to play.
‘In fact, in the coming weeks and months, it gets even more so, which is great.’
And the star is expecting some significant backlash from fans as his character becomes more and more like Kim.
He added: ‘I think it becomes very apparent that he is cut from the same cloth as Kim! I don’t think there’s any getting away from it, really.
‘Jamie has tried and tried to stay away from the Tate line and the Tate way of living. But essentially he feels like he’s been cornered with every choice that he’s made. Every choice he’s made has blown up in his face.
‘Jamie starts to feel like there’s no way out, other than to be ruthless. There’s some really interesting stuff coming up, which people are probably going to hate Jamie for, but they’ll find him intriguing as well.’
