When you play a mother and son for as long as Gillian Taylforth and Adam Woodyatt have in EastEnders, sometimes the line between fiction and reality can become a little blurred.
Or just completely crossed! The pair are so close and have built such a strong mother and son relationship that Adam, who plays Ian Beale, used to turn up from nights out, completely steaming, to Gillian’s house.
The Kathy Beale legend could be woken up by Adam in the early hours of 2am – when he would then let himself in to raid her fridge!
And, like a trooper, Gillian brushed it off and said she didn’t mind.
The duo will reveal in an upcoming episode of Secrets From The Square that they actually call one another mum and son in real life rather than their actual names.
Recalling when they met each other for the first time, Adam revealed that it was Gillian’s birthday and she was late for the very first cast meeting of EastEnders.
He told presenter Stacey Dooley: ‘Because it was her birthday, someone got there late. And everyone was already there. She burst through and I shouted “mum!”, she shouted “son” and that’s it.
‘Right from day one we just clicked! She would get a ring on the doorbell at 2am after I was drunk from a night out, I’m hungry mum!’
Gillian laughed: ‘And he goes straight to the fridge, and helps himself. What you got!?’
Adam reminded her: ‘I emptied the fridge of chicken nuggets in 1987.’
Well that’s certainly taking method acting to a whole new level. But the pair clearly have a ball working with one another and were full of praise of each others’ performances during the interview.
In fact, Gillian even exclaimed ‘my poor son!’ when Stacey played footage of his dramatic mud fight with Laurie Brett during Ian and Jane’s wedding episode.
They’re so close that Gillian said that he always apologises in advance when he has to be horrible to her in the script – and assures her that he doesn’t mean it.
And they have a hug afterwards. Awww!
Arguments. Making up with a hug. Raiding the fridge. Yep, they’re mother and son in all but blood, all right!
EastEnders: Secrets From The Square continues on Monday 27 July at 8pm on BBC One.
