The coronavirus death toll in the UK now stands at 44,517 after another 126 were confirmed to have died on Wednesday.
The figures, released by the Department for Health, include deaths in all settings.
Meanwhile, the Chancellor delivered his summer economic update – or coronavirus ‘mini-budget’ – to the House of Commons yesterday where he confirmed a stamp duty holiday for anyone buying new homes up to £500,000.
Sunak also announced a number of new initiatives on Wednesday including the Government’s plan to give every Brit vouchers to spend in restaurants in a bid to help save the hospitality industry amid the pandemic.
The ‘eat out to help out’ initiative offers customers a discount worth up to £10 per head when they eat out from Monday to Wednesday in August.
