Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) has never had much luck with men – whether they have cheated, turned out to be killers, realised they are gay or are in love with someone else, she is pretty used to having her heart broken.
So it’s no surprise that the long suffering Coronation Street hairdresser is on her guard when Gary Windass (Mikey North), her latest husband-to-be, makes several gestures towards his ex Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien).
Sensing that her life is about to be shattered yet again, Maria sets out to confront her groom-to-be – is he in love with someone else?
After saving Sarah’s life when she was chased by him in front of an oncoming van, Gary has secretly begged her to keep quiet about the fact that he killed Rick Neelan, imploring her to help him.
With Sarah having visited Gary, Maria assumes this to be innocent. But when she finds herself talking to Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) and Carla (Alison King) about the downturn of the furniture business, she is stunned when Carla informs her that Gary has backtracked on increasing the rent for Underworld.
Knowing they aren’t doing so well financially, Maria draws the conclusion that he is doing this as a favour to Sarah and she feels uneasy.
Back home, she directly asks him if he still has feelings for his ex but he completely denies this and tells her that his decision was due to everything Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) is going through.
Maria feels relieved as she hugs him close. With their wedding fast approaching though, she should brace herself for that familiar feeling of anguish as it’s clear as day that Gary still sfeels very strongly about Sarah indeed.
