Ever since discovering the life destroying news that her beloved son Oliver is terminally ill, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) has been a broken woman in Coronation Street. Determined to get a second opinion and certain that she is the only one who Oliver needs, poor Leanne has been pushing away all of the support from her loved ones.
It even led her to saying some horrific things to her sister Toyah (Georgia Taylor) but after an apology, Toyah knew she had to be there for her and encouraged her friend Josie to come over.
Josie is in charge of a support group for parents who have terminally ill children and Leanne finds herself taking some comfort as Josie speaks to her about her experience.
It is hauntingly similar to what Leanne is going through and Leanne takes away the message that she has to value the time she has left with Oliver – and that the support network around her will help.
After Josie leaves, Leanne declares that listening to her has made her realise that they need to make Oliver’s life the best it can be for as long as possible and that she intends to take Oliver to Cornwall after all, as a holiday will do him good and his happiness is her top priority.
Imran (Charlie de Melo) tentatively broaches the subject of fostering with Nick (Ben Price) and explains how they’ve put their plans on hold so as not to upset Leanne. With Nick’s encouragement, Toyah reveals her fostering plans to Leanne. Leanne admits the timing isn’t great but assures her she has her blessing.
As Toyah and Leanne unite, they promise to be there for one another. It’s certain to be an extremely difficult few months ahead for the family.
But is Leanne now in a stronger place to face up to the tragedy that is going to turn her life upside down forever?
