Several people have been severely injured after a car swerved off a road and ploughed into a crowd outside a train station in the German capital.
One person was reportedly trapped underneath the black Mercedes SUV after it hit pedestrians outside the Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten train station, in Hardenbergplatz, on Sunday morning, according to BILD News.
At least seven people have been injured in the incident which happened shortly after 7am.
Three of those have suffered ‘serious injuries’, Berlin’s fire department said on Twitter, adding that one person had to be resuscitated at the scene, while two helicopters were scrambled to the scene.
Around 60 firefighters were deployed along with explosive detection dogs, local news reported.
In a statement, Berlin’s fire department said: ‘For reasons not yet clear, a car went off the road and drove onto the sidewalk.
‘Seven people were injured, three of them seriously. One person had to be resuscitated. Many of those affected are cared for in a pastoral manner.’
A police spokesman told the German site that officers currently believe the incident was an accident caused by the driver going too fast and losing control of the car while turning a corner.
Enquiries are ongoing.
