GameCentral readers name the unlikely sequels they’d most like to see come back on PS5 and Xbox Series X, from Dead Space to Shining Force.
The question for this week’s Hot Topic was inspired by reader Korbie, who asked what franchise would you most want to see return in the next generation as a sequel, reboot or remake?
Despite the number of unexpected revamps we’ve had lately nobody seemed to have any difficulty thinking up new ones, especially after the announcement of the Alex Kidd remake. Although many of the suggestions were for relatively new games, not just retro titles.
New blood
Since there is some kind of hope that Konami is interested in making video games again I’m going to say Castlevania for this. In fact I’ll throw in a non-first person Metroid for nothing too, because despite the popularity of Metroidvania neither of the games that invented have had a new game for years and there’s no sign of a new one anytime soon either.
Personally I always preferred Castlevania though for the horror atmosphere and fun lore. The recent anime series helps with that and I can’t believe they haven’t already taken advantage of its success to make a new game. (Well, actually, I can believe it but it’s still ridiculous).
I’ve heard many people say that Bloodborne is basically the 3D Castlevania we’ve always wanted, and I can totally see that. It would certainly be a starting point for inspiration, although it’d need to have a lot more items and platforming to really make the grade. And not be annoyingly hard.
I’ve no idea if this will happen, I guess it depeneds on whether Metroid Prime 4 is a hit or not and on whether Konami care about games enough to pump enough money into making a proper Castlevania. If they’re waiting for the next gen though, all the better.

Tyrannosaurus Regina
It is amazing how many previously unimaginable sequels have happened over the last few years, even if that makes it even more depressing when they turn out to be no good or worse, prove that the original was not as good as you remember.
I hope that’s not true here, although I did replay the game last year and still enjoyed it, but I’d like to see Dino Crisis make a return and get the full remake treatment – not in terms of remaking the original but having something that looked and played as good as Resident Evil 2. I do not see how Resident Evil with dinosaurs isn’t an instant seller but we’ve had nothing for coming on four generations now.
At first it looked like the chances of a return were pretty good but recent rumours suggest Capcom were working on a new game a few years ago and canned the project. They could change their mind but I’ve got a feeling they won’t. If they scooped it away just recently and thought it wasn’t worth it I don’t see much has happened to changed their mind now.

Dead air
As a Dead Space fan I had a brief moment of optimism this week when it seemed there was an outside chance that there could be a new game but as usual… nothing. EA aren’t in a great spot at the moment so I’m hoping they have been looking through their back catalogue to see what they might bring back but there’s been no sign from them they’re interesting.
I did take some heart from the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order though as that’s a single-player, story-based game that’s quite hard and slow-paced, so that’s proof to them that that sort of game can be profitable. Especially as Dead Space doesn’t involve any kind of expensive licence (they could licence it out to movie companies, if they were on the ball, but they never have).
Survival horror is rare enough nowadays that I would think any fan of just the general concept would welcome it back, but in reality the chances are slim. Especially as the last thing I’d want is some kind of action-based co-op game like the third one. It has to be proper Dead Space or nothing.

Zero proof
It’s been in the news a lot lately but I still have never seen any proof that FromSoftware are making Bloodborne 2. In my opinion it is their best game and one of the best games of all time. I’d say you could cut the atmosphere in that game with knife but frankly you’d need something sharper, it is just an incredible experience from beginning to end, that constantly surprises, and horrifies you.
I also hope that Microsoft brings back Perfect Dark. The sequel (prequel, whatever) was terrible but I really feel there’s something more that could be done with the whole sci-fi spy thing. I’m not too bothered whether it’s first person or third person but it needs to have the complex objectives and freeform nature of the original.
My final choice would be a new Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic but who knows what’s going on with that or BioWare at the moment. That should be the most obvious sequel of all but I’ve less confidence in that happening than any of my other choices.

Micro hope
The recent news about the Sega Game Gear Micro suddenly had me pining for a lot of their old franchises, particularly Shining Force, since it has a whole colour edition to itself. With the news that Alex Kidd is making a comeback now I’m hoping that Sega has a policy to farm out all its older series to indie developers, which I’m totally fine with.
They would never have done it themselves and if they did they would’ve tried to turn it into some kind of modernised trash that was nothing like the old games. If they can find someone, maybe the people that did WarGroove, to make a new game that would be amazing. Turn-based strategies are in nowadays and the originals are still playable today, and better than Fire Emblem in my opinion.
I don’t know if indie developers are going to Sega or if Sega are seeking them out but I hope they just turn up the heat on the whole idea and we get things like Phantasy Star, Landstalker, and Shinobi as well.

A new hope
I’d really love to see a reboot of Alex Kid In Miracle World but that will never happen… oh!
Games I’d like to see sequels to are:
- Parodius
- Goemon (Legend Of The Mystical Ninja)
- Sunset Riders
All Konami classics from a bygone era and I know it won’t happen, but if Alex Kidd can rise from the dead I guess there is a small glimmer of hope. I may as well add wanting to see a Psycho Fox reboot to my list.

There’s always a chance
Classic Hot Topic question, so many potential answers. I love the fact that no matter how obscure the suggestions everyone is going to come up with are, in gaming there’s always that little glimmer of hope for a comeback.
I’d be delighted to see a sequel to the GameCube/Wii role-playing games Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and The Lost Ocean, and The Last Story. I have wrote in about these games before, they were both unfairly ignored but they are two imaginative examples of the genre with some likeable characters and rock-solid gameplay. I think the former got a sequel, that never reached Europe, to be fair. Characters from both were featured in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as spirits – it was nice to see someone else still remember these games existed.
A new Monkey Island game would be another suggestion. I think enough time had passed since the last try and although the point ‘n’ click adventure genre is hardly in rude health, the setting could probably work really well as maybe a Metroidvania or something along those lines. A lot of the personnel from the original games still seem to be very active and there are still a lot of people out there who love this franchise, so hopefully we do see a follow-up at some point.
Lastly, possibly my most fanciful suggestion, which is really saying something considering my first two, I would love to see a new Nights Into Dreams game. This franchise is just such an endearing mess. Flawed but brilliant original that not enough people got to play, terrible sequel several years later spaced out with the occasional cameo elsewhere.
Sega didn’t seem to forget about the franchise for many years, but at the same time a sequel never felt likely, and that’s even more so the case now as it really feels like Sega aren’t interested in making this sort of game anymore. I don’t think they ever really got to realise the vision they had for this franchise though, and I would love to see that finally come to life using the power of modern consoles – Inbox magic, do your thing.
