Sony has announced 28 new games for the PS5, including a new Ratchet & Clank, a remake of Demon’s Souls and a LittleBigPlanet spin-off.
After months of waiting, and a week’s delay, Sony has finally unveiled the first wave of games for the PlayStation 5 and, surprisingly, what the console looks like.
Despite it being made clear beforehand that the price wouldn’t be announced some fans are still getting upset that it hasn’t been, but other than that Sony seems to have enjoyed a very successful reveal.
The event was only a little over an hour long, and thankfully free of almost any waffle or talking heads, so there wasn’t much detailed information on anything, but that will come in the days and weeks to come.
For now, here’s a brief rundown of everything that was announced, some of which was given a release date and some of which wasn’t.
Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar Games) – autumn 2021
The first game to be shown but also the only one without any PlayStation 5 footage. A new standalone version of GTA Online is also planned for the same time, which will be free for PlayStation 5 owners for the first three months.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Sony) – Christmas 2020
You’ll notice most of the pre-reveal rumours were on the money, except for the last minute one about Spider-Man 2 not being developer Insomniac’s next game. Although the rumour was right in that they have two titles on the go at the moment, with a new Ratchet & Clank as well. Oddly, although Spider-Man is a launch title it was shown the least out of any of the first party games, which probably means a dedicated reveal is coming soon.
Gran Turismo 7 (Sony) – TBA
It was always obvious the, accidental, leaks about a new Gran Turismo were real and so this was far less of a surprise than Sony would’ve hoped. You got a look at a good amount of in-game footage too, with some typically impressive graphics but little in the way of explicit details.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (Sony) – TBA
What’s particularly surprising about Spider-Man’s release date is that Rift Apart has clearly been designed to show off all the features of the PlayStation 5 and would’ve been a perfect launch title, even thought it doesn’t seem like it is. The use of dimensional portals to instantly change location is obviously meant to demonstrate the usefulness of the SSD and developer Insomniac made a point of mentioning the ray-tracing on Clank and the use of the DualSense enhanced feedback. Beyond just being a playable tech demo though the game looked great, with what seems to be an alternative universe female Ratchet.
Project Athia (Square Enix) – TBA
It’s only a codename but this new IP will be out only on PlayStation 5 and PC and is by new studio Luminous Productions. It seems to be some kind of third person action game and appears to have a very nice line in giant dragons.
Stray (Annapurna Interactive) – 2021
Although the reveal featured both triple-A games and indie titles it was honestly difficult to tell the difference most of the time and though we have no real idea what’s going on in this trailer it features lots of robots and the ability to play as a cat, so we’re in.
Returnal (Sony) – 2021
Resogun and Super Stardust makers Housemarque were rumoured to have a new game in the reveal and this was certainly one of the more interesting trailers. It appears to be a cross between unfairly underrated Tom Cruise movie Edge Of Tomorrow and some kind of survival horror, as your character constantly dies and returns to life. Even though it’s a third person actioner there appears to be quite a bit of bullet hell action, which suggests Housemarque haven’t lost their arcade edge.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure (Sony) – TBA
An unexpected return for LittleBigAdventure’s much loved mascot, although it doesn’t seem to have any construction elements to it. It’s being developed by Team Sonic Racing creators Sumo Digital and is a four-player co-op game with a lot of 2.5D platforming. A surprising choice given the PlayStation 5’s capabilities but it looks fun.
Destruction All Stars (Sony) – 2021
This almost seemed liked it wanted to be a new Twisted Metal game and we imagine there’s a good chance that’s what it started out as, but the final game is a lot more family friendly looking and has the neat gimmick that you can get out of your car and engage in a bit of platforming parkour as well as just vehicular combat.
Kena: Bridge Of Spirits (Ember Lab) – Christmas 2020
A particularly attractive looking indie game, this seemed reminiscent of both Zelda and Pikmin as you use forest elements to… decompose dead and rotting elements, according to the press release. We’re intrigued, especially if it plays as good as it looks.
Goodbye Volcano High (KO_OP) – 2021
We think by now everyone’s sick of games featuring anthropomorphised dinosaurs in a cartoon world that’s about to be destroyed by an extinction level event, but if you can manage just one more this looked great, and perhaps reminiscent of indie hit Night In The Woods.
Oddworld: Soulstorm (Oddworld Inhabitants) – TBA
The only game in the reveal that’s been widely previewed before, thanks to a series of delays, this started off as a remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus and is now basically a completely separate game. It’s still similar to the remake of the first Oddworld though, but that’s no bad thing.
Ghostwire: Tokyo (Bethesda) – 2021
Although it was announced at last year’s E3 this was the first time anyone’s seen gameplay footage of the latest from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. It actually reminded us more of killer7, which he was a co-writer on, with it’s unrelentless weirdness and strangely stilted first person action. But we consider that to be very much a positive.
Jett: The Far Shore (Superbrothers) – Christmas 2020
We’re sure we’ve seen this at some preview event or other but anything by Superbrothers is automatically of interest, even though we don’t really understand what’s going on in the trailer. There seems to be some sort of Civilization style nurturing going on but also an action element… but really, your guess is as good as ours.
Godfall (Gearbox Publishing) – Christmas 2020
The first ever PlayStation 5 game to be announced, at last year’s The Game Awards, this melee-focused take on Destiny style looter shooters still doesn’t look entirely convincing. It’s only published by Borderlands creators Gearbox, so their influence is probably minimal, but if the Dark Souls-looking combat is fun then it could still impress.
Solar Ash (Annapurna Interactive) – 2021
A game from the creators of Hyper Light Drifter, this seems to be a much bigger budget affair even though it does have some visual similarities to the 2D artwork of Heart Machine’s last game. The spinning perspectives and surreal imagery certainly look interesting, although we’ve no real idea what’s going on, other than a black hole seems to be involved.
Hitman 3 (Io Interactive) – January 2021
Although most of these games are PlayStation 5 console exclusives, this one is a normal multiformat release. Now published directly by Io Interactive themselves the trailer doesn’t give away much, other than that the new Dubai setting looks pretty gorgeous.
Astro Bot’s Playroom (Sony) – Christmas 2020
Alas, this doesn’t seem to have anything to do with VR game Astro Bot: Robot Rescue but is instead a free demo that comes pre-loaded with the console and demonstrates all the new functions of the DualSense controller, much like the original The Playroom.
Little Devil Inside (Neostream Interactive) – TBA
Another trailer where we’re not sure what’s going on, but we definitely liked the look of it, especially the papercraft inspired art style. It seems to be some sort of open world adventure not dissimilar to Monster Hunter, with the official description also mentioning survival elements.
NBA 2K21 (2K) – autumn 2020
You could make a good argument for this featuring the best graphics of any of the trailers, with an almost photorealistic portrayal of whoever the no doubt very famous basketball player is. The problem with NBA 2K though is all you can worry about is how many microtransactions it has.
Bugsnax (Young Horses) – Christmas 2020
Definitely one of the most memorable reveals, this amusing mix between Pokémon and… god knows what is by the creators of Octodad and seems to involve eating insect/food hybrids that then transform your body into whatever the food was. Or something.
Demon’s Souls (Sony) – TBA
It’s been rumoured for what seems like years that Bluepoint, who were behind the remake of Shadow Of The Colossus, are working on a remake of Demon’s Souls, the spiritual predecessor to Dark Souls, and now it’s proven to be true. Considering how well their previous remake turned out this should be amazing.
Deathloop (Bethesda) – Christmas 2020
Another game which Bethesda showed off last year, but we haven’t seen in action till now. It’s the latest from Dishonored creators Arkane and again seems to have a Groundhog Day/Edge of Tomorrow vibe in that you’re stuck in a time loop where you’re being hunted by elite partygoers and a fellow assassin.
Resident Evil Village (Capcom) – 2021
Although it’s implied by the logo this doesn’t seem to be called Resident Evil 8, even though it stars Ethan Winters from Resident Evil 7. Given the werewolf-like creature and an apparent heel turn from Chris Redfield it seems all the leaks so far are correct. Although the same source’s prediction of a new Silent Hill hasn’t come true yet.
Pragmata (Capcom) – 2022
We didn’t realise it at the time, but this is also being published by Capcom, so it’s nice to see a new IP, even if we haven’t got a clue what’s supposed to be going on. The official description doesn’t offer much explanation either, just that it’s set in a ‘dystopian near-future on Earth’s Moon’.
Horizon Forbidden West (Sony) – TBA
Technically there weren’t any leaks about a follow-up to Horizon Zero Dawn but everyone assumed one was going to happen anyway and they weren’t wrong. It’s not necessarily a launch title though and we think most would’ve expected a slightly more jaw-dropping trailer, but it still looked good and the original was only a few extra features away from being a genuine classic.
Sony’s press release also lists two other games, Tribes Of Midgard from Gearbox Publishing/Norsfell and The Pathless from Annapurna Interactive/Giant Squid. Although unless we took a toilet break we’ve forgotten about and missed them, they weren’t actually in the reveal event.
The Pathless, from the creators of ABZÛ was first announced over a year ago and Tribes Of Midgard seems to be some sort of Diablos style hack ‘n’ slash with building elements, which we’re definitely up for.
